Hi Chris/Kevin:

The name Tryphena is not all that uncommon in other parts of the island. Perhaps the shorter form is more familiar "Triffie". This name must have been important in the Gaden family because it is carried down not only to Tryphena Gaden married to Benjamin Sweetland but also to Tryphena, dgt of Wm Hart Gaden md to Thos Dibbs, Tryphena (Gaden) Sweetland's dgt, Tryphena, Thomas Eppes Gaden had a dgt Tryphena married toThomas Beckett and there was a Tryphena Gaden who died in 1921 (age 86) and lived on Merrymeeting Road.

You are correct in saying that William Hart Gaden is the sister of Tryphena Gaden married to Benjamin Sweetland, Thomas Eppes Gaden is another sibling among others. They are children of George and Emma Gaden of Liverpool. George was Lieutenant in the Newfoundland Regiment as well as being associated with the firm Hart, Eppes, Gaden and Robinson. This Company was in the NF trade as early as 1779. Notice that both children have middle names Hart and Eppes. There is a lot of intermarriage between the Gadens and Garlands.

These are all prominent, educated people both in England and NL, so it is not surprising that Wm Hart Gaden would be Belgium Consul in oneof the other British colonies, ie, Australia. I believe Wm had 8 children when he died in Australia.
