According to Robert Carter's diaries, the occasion of William Morry Le Messurier's birth and Christening was marked by a big party at the Le Messurier house on Feb. 12, 1846 which brought in guests from far and wide (e.g. Robert, James and Mary Carter from Ferryland but also Miss Brashaw from Placentia and Alan Goodridge and his wife and J. W. Saunders from Renews). The guests, or many of them, were then unable to head home because of
a heavy gale, some of them staying in Caplin Bay and others making it as far as Ferryland the first day and then being detained again.


Grace's maiden name was Goodridge & she married a Goodridge. She was t he 6th
and youngest daughter of Henry and Susannah Goodridge of Peignton. Sh e and her
husband lived in Renews until 1841 when they moved to St. John's wit h their
first 4 children.

•  Interesting: His economics study book dated 1774 wound up with Robert Carter, JP, 1774, Paignton, Devon, England. It is found with a collection of Robert Carter's diaries written between 1832 and 1850 but would have been initially passed on to his father or even his grandfather by one of the Goodridges who came to Newfoundland.

According to Laura Morry Williams, in her book, Over the fence, Henry Goodridge company took over the Tors Cove Trading Company at the Pool in the 1920s though they have been established in Newfoundland at Renews since 1807. Alan shifted the business to St. John's in the 1850s. They went bankrupt by 1912 but reemerged by 1917 in partnership with George Carter of Ferryland (husband of Elizabeth Goodyear).
