Cyril LeMessurier Kirby was born May 27, 1916 in Lamaline, Nfld. He moved with his family to Port Rexton, Trinity Bay and then to Harbour Grace, Conception Bay. He joined Harvey and Company in St. John's in 1937. He joined the British Army in 1940, and left Newfoundland April 14, 1940, arriving in England April 25, 1940. He met his future wife Thelma Marper in September of 1940, and were engaged in June of 1942. Cyril left for North Africa on January 25, 1943 with the 166th Newfoundland Regiment to fight against the Nazi's led by Field Marshall Rommel. Cyril was in the Victory March in Tunis, North Africa. One final battle was at Longstop Hill on April 23, 1943, a Good Friday and also St. George's Day. It was the start of the final battle to push the Germans out of North Africa. The Regiment then went across to Sicily where they rested and then on to Taranto, Italy and up the peninsula to Monte Cassino by 1944. Cyril's medals include 39/45 Medal, North African Star, Italian Star, Defence of Britain Medal, Canadian Defence (CD) and the Victory Medal. Cyril returned to Newfoundland from Italy on leave in early 1945. On his return to Italy whilst in the mid-Atlantic war was declared over. He then returned to England in August 1945 and married Thelma Marper on August 21, 1945 at St. John's Church, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Thelma was a member of the Women's Army. She had been born in Australia of English parents. She grew up in England from the age of three. They left England on January 7, 1946 for Newfoundland. Cyril took up a position with Harvey and Company as a salesman. In 1950 he went with a Ford Dealership as Sales Manager. In the next venture ran his own used car dealership, but the city council wanted the land for a housing project. He gave this up and worked for another car dealership and later Dominion Automobile Association. Cyril became the Sergeant at-Arms for the Newfoundland House of Assembly, so far for 18 years. During his spare time he worked on Canadian Legion committees. He was also Commanding Officer of Sea Cadets for 12 years.

November 15th is the 100th anniversary of the birth of my mother, born Ellen Margaret Kirby in Lamaline Newfoundland Nov 15 1917. She married my father John Ronald Peck on July 19th 1944 at St. Paul's Harbour Grace. They then went to my father's home in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. They were able to have nearly 60 years together.
