A few days ago I received by mail a copy of the book "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly" by Stephen Callaghan, purchased from the Offaly County Council Heritage OIffice following a lead from Tommy Quinlisk.

Amongst the photographs and transcripts of gravestones of interest I found one that included the names of siblings Denis, Edward and Nora Quinlisk, along with "Eileen Cleary" wife of Patrick Cleary. The stone was erected in special honour of Daniel Quinlisk by his nephew only identified on the stone as "Patrick" with no surname given but presumably Quinlisk.

I think I have identified the first four (including "Eileen") as the children of Patrick Quinlisk born at Behamore around 1840. He had four children: Edward by his first wife Judith Gaynor; and then Daniel, Nora and "Nannie" or Annie by his second wife, Margaret Flannery. They would have all been of an age to match the dates on this stone.

But the "Eileen" has me thrown off. There was clearly no child of this family by this name. And the stone gives no inkling of why she is mentioned there along with her husband. I surmise that one of the four children of Patrick married (probably Nannie or Annie) and that this was her daughter. But that remains to be proved.

On balance, however, I am positive that I have identified the correct family because they were residents of Mucklone West on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Why their parents are not remembered on this memorial stone is not known.

General:
24 Dec 2007: When I obtained a copy of the baptismal record of Jamie's father from the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre website I noted that the sponsors were Cornelius and Eliza O'Brien. Jamie confirmed that Cornelius (or Con) was her father's uncle but wasn't sure if Eliza was his wife. The 1911 Census shows his wife as Johanna so I am sticking with that. Eliza is most probably the mother, although it is not normal for a mother to be the godmother.

071108: 1911 Census shows her as the wife of Cornelius living in Glenawinna, Aghnameadle, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. Presumably he has inherited his mother's farm after her death sometime between the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. They are childless. He is age 55 and she 46.

I have added her name as a child of this family because she was a sponsor at the baptism of the child of Thomas O'Brien and Mary O'Meara, William O'Brien. It seems most likely that the sponsor was an aunt and her name jives.
