From the St. John's Daily News
Sun. Sept. 29, 1901 MARRIAGES: CLAPP - CARTER - On the 25th inst., at St. Luke's Church, Ferryland, by the Rev. G. Ross GODDEN, William Mainwaring CLAPP to Ida Frederica, daughter of William T. S. CARTER, of Ferryland.
ARTICLES: HYMENIAL CLAPP - CARTER The marriage of Mr. William CLAPP, son of the late Gilbert CLAPP, Esq., St. John's, with Miss Ida CARTER, daughter of Mr. William T. S. CARTER, H. M. C., of Ferryland, took place at St. Luke's Church, Ferryland, on the 25th inst.. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. G. Ross GODDEN, curate of St. Thomas's Church, St. John's. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in a charming toilette of white silk, invested and arranged with lace and white pearl trimming, and wore a veil of Brussels net over a wreath of orange blossoms, which also formed the trimming of the bodice. She carried a shower bouquet of white roses and gardenias. She was attended by the Misses May and Maud CARTER, her sisters. They wore pretty dresses of white crepe dechine over yellow, trimmed with lace; and black picture hats, which were turned back from the face with feathers, bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums, and gold curb bracelets, being their gifts from the bridegroom. He was supported by Mr. D. M. BROWNING and Mr. A. C. GOODRIDGE, of St. John's. The little church was prettily decorated with ferns and white flowers. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the residence of the bride's father, and later in the afternoon the happy pair left for Bay Bulls en route for Whitbourne to spend the honeymoon. The bride went away in a navy blue cloth skirt and bodice, worn with a blue silk blouse, and hat trimmed with white silk and lace.

Notes
General:
Email from Enid O'Brien to Buzz Gardiner cc to me on 301106: "You might know that Ida Frederica of this family who md Wm Mainwaring Clapp changed his name to William Mainwaring at the suggestion of a relative for inheritance benefits because the name Mainwaring was dying out."
280208: Wrote letter to find out the particulars of the death of his brother-in-law James Henry Carter
210616:
There is some uncertainty as to whether Mainwaring was a middle name or part of compound surname, or possibly both. Jonathan Mainwaring operates a family tree on Ancestry and has his father's name given there as Mainwaring-Clapp, a combination of his grandparents surnames supposedly though there is doubt about his grandmother being named Mainwaring. William Mainwaring Mainwaring-Clapp seems a bit repetitious. Other entries for Jonathan's father, Cyril, seem to suggest that Mainwaring was actually the full surname and the "Clapp" was dropped in that generation as it has apparently been in the case of Johnathan as well.
231218:
William is identified as William M. Mainwaring, Solicitor, on his brother's will in 1826. This is the first official document on which his name no longer includes Clapp.

From Teignmouthnfld Blog Spot:
"William M Clapp b:1861 in St John's Newfoundland married Ida Frederica Carter on 25th September 1901.Ida b:1875 Ferryland Newfoundland, d:1935 St John's, this information was taken from an ancestry family tree."
"Family Traditions: Gilbert Clapp whose family originated from Devon England and settled in St. John's changed the family name to Mainwaring by deed poll."
This latter information is incorrect. Gilbert Clapp never changed his name. Only his youngest son, William Mainwaring Clapp did so and it is still up in the air why he did so.
This is what Jean Carter Stirling had to say on the matter today:
"Pam Mainwaring lives here in St. John's, unmarried, daughter of Norma, whom I knew quite well. Cyril and Ray Mainwaring were brothers, and yes, the surname had been changed from Clapp to Mainwaring at the request of the relative who had no heirs and was afraid his name would die out. If your name was Clapp wouldn't you jump at the chance of changing it????"
And again, what Enid O'Brien had to say on the matter some time ago:
" Email from Enid O'Brien to Buzz Gardiner cc to me on 301106: "You might know that Ida Frederica of this family who md Wm Mainwaring Clapp changed his name to William Mainwaring at the suggestion of a relative for inheritance benefits because the name Mainwaring was dying out." which she added today:
" is folklore and I got it from Ida Michael. I presume she got it from her grandmother. I didn't follow up on it to try to prove or disprove it but as Ida seems to be named for her I thought it reasonable that it was probably true."
Eureka!
Finally found the solution buried amongst a mountain of other information on the Clapp family put together by a blogger named Teignnfld on Blog Spot.
The second great grandparents of William Mainwaring Clapp, the man who chose to rename himself William Mainwaring Mainwaring, resulting in at least three generations (so far) of misnamed progeny, were Gilbert Clapp and Amy Mainwaring of Exeter.
So it was in honour of this distant relative that he chose to rename himself, evidently because the line was dying out if one believes the hearsay.
