HARRIET LOUISA, DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ANN CARTER, DIED 26 DECEMBER 1827; AGED 1 1/2

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Enid O'Brien email 25/03/02: Vital Stats Born May 1, 1826, Bap Aug 4, 1826 Harriett Louise to Robert Carter (Merchant) and Sarah Carter. Petty Hr Rec. Born May 1, 1826, Bap Aug 4, 1826 Harriet Louise to Robert Carter and Sarah Rendell (Merchant and collector of customs). This is the Robert who wrote the diary. Harriet died December 28th, 1827.

There is an obvious contradiction here. There were two Robert Carter's one married to Ann Hutchings and one married to Sarah Rendell. In one case the information on NLGS/NGB site suggested Harriet Louise (Louisa) was the daughter of Robert and Ann. In the other case Vital Stats. shows her the daughter of Robert and Sarah. Needs to be explained.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Email from Enid O'Brien 26/03/02: The full reference for the date of death December 28th, 1827 is as follows: Gert Crosbie Books. Carter, Harriet Louisa, infant daughter of Robert Carter, HM Customs, Ferryland, December 28, 1827 Ledger (As this appeared in the Ledger on December 28th there is a possibility thatshe died on 27th but the notice did not say that).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

150705: The gravestone has the name spelled differently. Roberta Sullivan's transcript above missed this discrepancy. What it actually says is: "HARRIETTE LOUISA, DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ANN CARTER, DIED 26 DECEMBER 1827; AGED 1 1/2" At least that is how I interpret it but the face of the gravestone has been badly damaged since Roberta's transcription and the part citing her mother's name is now gone.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

100706: One of the photos of the gravestone on the Stonepics CD NF154 quite clearly shows that the mother's name began with an "S" so it was obviously Sarah, not Ann. And the correct spelling of their daughter's name was "Harriette" according to the gravestone.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

200806: BDM on CD-ROM reports that death notice appeared on 28 Dec 1827 in: 1) Public Ledger 1820-1882 (issues available begin 1827) and stated that Deceased was the infant daughter of Robert Carter, H.M. Customs, Ferryland.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

221106: According to information from Enid O'Brien Gerald Pocius read the gravestone as part of his thesis research and recorded it differently again, including a reference to words at the bottom of the stone that appeared to him to say "Peterbridge, Devon". There is no such geographic place name so if he got it right it may have something to do with a Petherbridge House, in reference to a Devon family that exists but that, to my knowledge, had no association with the Carters. This would need further visual inspection of the stone and some research to work out.

Mon. Sept. 25, 1922
OBITUARY
HENRY D. CARTER
Mr. Henry D. CARTER
, youngest and last surviving son of the late Sir Frederick B. T. CARTER, K.C. M.C., passed away yesterday. He as been unwell for about a year, and in company with Mrs. CARTER, visited the Old Country recently for consultation and treatment. About three months ago he returned to Newfoundland, and shortly after his illness assumed an acute form. Mr. CARTER was, until two years ago, the Assistance Manager of the Bank of Montreal in this city. His bank career covered a period of over 40 years. By 1894, when the Commercial Bank closed, he had won his way by sheer merit and devotion to duty to the accountancy of the Bank. His services were secured by the Bank of Montreal on its opening here a few weeks later. Since then his career was one of steady promotion, until his retirement. In financial and business circles Mr. CARTER was held in general respect and regard. For sometime he was a churchwarden in St. Thomas's Parish. He also held official positions in the City Club. Predeceased by his three brothers, Weston, a monument to those memory is erected on the Mall, Hugh and Stanley, Barristers, the only remaining member of Sir Frederick's family are Mrs. HENDERSON and Miss Louisa CARTER. Mr. CARTER is survived by his wife, daughter of the late Hon. James BAIRD, M.L.C., three sons , Cyril, director of James Baird, Limited, Frederick of the Bank of Montreal at Halifax and Harry of the city, also by two daughters, Margaret, wife of Mr. Jack BAIRD, and Gertrude of this city. His genial personally and kindly counsel will be missed by all who were privileged to enjoy his friendship. The funeral takes place tomorrow from Mr. Cyril CARTER's residence, Queen's Road.

It seems that Hugh Hoyles Carter suffered frequently from "pecuniary embarrassment". Twice he hocked a 40 acre parcel of land he obtained by grant on the salmonier line, first to his brother Henry Davis Carter for $60 on May 23 1885 and then a few months later on June 4 1886 to his father, Sir Frederick B T Carter for $200. He was a Queen's Counsel and so should not have had financial problems, which begs the question why he was in such financial distress. It also begs the question if his father and brother knew he had hocked the same property to the two of them!

Notes
General:
[Tessier.FTW] Carter, Hugh Hoyles (1847-1919). Lawyer. Born St. John's. Second son of Sir Frederick B.T. Carter qv. Educated St. John's. Hugh Carter followed the family tradition and read law; he was called to the Newfoundland Bar on May 18, 1876. In that year he became clerk of the Legislative Council of Newfoundland and Private Secretary to the Administrator of Government. He also practised law with W.J. Hogan and I.R. McNeilly. He died on Feburary 19, 1919 after having spent almost forty-four years in Government service.

281106: George LeMessurier's family tree indicates he never married so there is a conflict with the Harcout Gardiner GEDCOM which has a son, Henry Pyne Carter.

301106: Harcourt Gardiner's family tree mistakenly had him as a son of Hugh Hoyles Carter, who never married. Enid O'Brien corrected the mistake. He was the son of Henry Davis Carter. I have moved him there.

301218:

Note that he was named after Sir. Hugh Hoyles, a Premier of Newfoundland and colleague of his father's.

From the St. John's Daily News

Sun. Sept. 29, 1901 MARRIAGES: CLAPP - CARTER - On the 25th inst., at St. Luke's Church, Ferryland, by the Rev. G. Ross GODDEN, William Mainwaring CLAPP to Ida Frederica, daughter of William T. S. CARTER, of Ferryland.

ARTICLES: HYMENIAL CLAPP - CARTER The marriage of Mr. William CLAPP, son of the late Gilbert CLAPP, Esq., St. John's, with Miss Ida CARTER, daughter of Mr. William T. S. CARTER, H. M. C., of Ferryland, took place at St. Luke's Church, Ferryland, on the 25th inst.. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. G. Ross GODDEN, curate of St. Thomas's Church, St. John's. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in a charming toilette of white silk, invested and arranged with lace and white pearl trimming, and wore a veil of Brussels net over a wreath of orange blossoms, which also formed the trimming of the bodice. She carried a shower bouquet of white roses and gardenias. She was attended by the Misses May and Maud CARTER, her sisters. They wore pretty dresses of white crepe dechine over yellow, trimmed with lace; and black picture hats, which were turned back from the face with feathers, bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums, and gold curb bracelets, being their gifts from the bridegroom. He was supported by Mr. D. M. BROWNING and Mr. A. C. GOODRIDGE, of St. John's. The little church was prettily decorated with ferns and white flowers. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the residence of the bride's father, and later in the afternoon the happy pair left for Bay Bulls en route for Whitbourne to spend the honeymoon. The bride went away in a navy blue cloth skirt and bodice, worn with a blue silk blouse, and hat trimmed with white silk and lace.

Notes
General:
It would appear from the recorded birth dates on NLGS website transcribed from the C of E Ferryland District records that Mary Louisa and Ida Frederika were a twin of each other. But the fact that sibling Caroline Maud seems from these records to have been born less than nine months before Ida and Mary makes one wonder if the transcribed records may be in error.

140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date.

301218:

According to Harry Shortis in his "Fugitive History", Vol. III, File 2 on the Newfoundland Regiment, Ida Frederica Carter (he refers to her as Mrs. Clapp) had possession of a miniature of her ancestor Col. Thomas Skinner and his sword. 3091
