This is the last will and Testament of John W. McCoubrey of Saint John's Newfoundland made on this twenty third day of May A.D. one thousand nine hundred and five I give and bequeath to my nephew Andrew Edward Wright of St. John's, Newfoundland all monies in my name in the Savings Bank of Montreal and in the Savings Bank of Newfoundland my Masonic insurance, my Newfoundland British Society mortality money, my watch & chain. The stock in trade and good will of the "Times" printing offices with outstanding bills due out of which all private and business debts are to be paid. The residue if any whether personal or of any other description, I also give and bequeath to my aforesaid nephew Andrew Edward Wright

This is how Candow describes the situation in "The Invisibles":

"In September [1861] a Matistrate's Court fined Hogsett and ordered him to pay costs for striking John William McCoubrey, owner of the Times and General Commercial Gazette, for no apparent reason. Plainly not a man to be trifled with, McCoubrey did Bannerman [Governor] and a great many others a favour by thrashing Hogsett with his cane."

030907: From Nfld. Genweb, exerpt from the Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser of 18 octr. 1879:

At St. John's, on the 10th inst., after a lingering illness of over three years, John Williams McCOUBREY, Esq., aged 73 years, Editor and Proprietor of the Times newspaper of that city. The deceased was a native of the city of Waterford, Ireland, and spent over half a century inSt. John's, during which period he gained the confidence and respect of all classes of the community.

Among other books he published this interesting tome:

"[1863] WINTER = James Winter, 1845?1911, A Lecture on the Decline of the Fisheries (St John's: J.W. McCoubrey [1863])."

160907: From Enid O'Brien: John Williams McCoubrey was from Waterford, Ireland. He had sons John, Richard and Andrew. He issued the first number of The Times in Newfoundland (Ref. Ye Old St. John's). There is also reference to him in Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, volume 3.

MCCOUBREY, JOHN WILLIAMS (c. 1806 1879). Printer; newspaper publisher. Born Waterford, Ireland, son of Andrew McCoubrey. Married Elizabeth Watts. McCoubrey founded the Times and General Commercial Gazette in 1832 and was editor and proprietor of the newspaper for nearly 50 years.
McCoubrey came to Newfoundland in 1823 as an apprentice to printer Robert Lee. He began pubhshing the Times in August 1832 and was proprietor, editor and publisher of the paper until his death (except for a brief period in 1849). When McCoubrey founded the Times, there were three other weekly or semi-weekly papers in St. John's: the Royal Gazette, the Public Ledger and the Newfoundlander qqv. McCoubrey's Times was essentially conservative, but attempted to be politically neutral as partisan disputes increasingly filled local papers. After his death the Times was taken over by John W. McCoubrey Jr., while the job printing aspect of the family business was managed by another son, Robert. McCOUBREY, JOHN WILLIAMS, newspaper proprietor; b. of middle-class Protestant parents in Waterford, Ireland, in 1806; d. at St John's, Nfld., on 10 Oct. 1879.

In 1819 John Williams McCoubrey's family emigrated to St John's, Newfoundland, where he was apprenticed to a well-known printer, Robert Lee Jr. After his seven years as an apprentice he went to work for John Shea's newspaper, the Newfoundlander, apparently both as printer and as journalist, until 1832, when he founded his own newspaper, the Times and General Commercial Gazette.

McCoubrey had no trouble with the colonial authorities, despite the tight control of the Newfoundland press at the time. Throughout his career he avoided the political and sectarian controversies usual in the journalism of St John's, and achieved a reputation for impartiality and personal integrity. A rival newspaper, the Public Ledger, records his support for Conservative candidates in the 1842 election. The incident in his life most celebrated by the obituarist in his own newspaper was his refusal to compound with his creditors, at great personal expense, after the fire of 1846, when his business was almost wiped out. Perhaps the most fitting last words on his career come from an anonymous correspondent to the Times, who wrote on 17 Oct. 1879 that he had never known McCoubrey "either through the press or otherwise utter one word to wound the feelings of any man, no matter to what creed or party he belonged."
