You mentioned Esther Merrifield Goss. She was the wife of John Dooley. Mother of Solomon Dooley 1810 and James Dooley1807. She was the daughter of Esther Merryfield who was raped by John Stackbald in Torbay Newfoundland in 1762. He was found guilty and hung. Esther became pregnant from the rape (I think) and delivered a baby girl. The baby girl was "adopted" by Solomon and Jan Goss. The baby was named Esther Merrifield Goss. Are you on Ancestry?

Thank you for responding.

I am a complete novice on WikiTree, having only just uploaded a small portion of my family tree a few days ago. I find the site extremely difficult to follow and so sympathise with your dilemma. It would be better if we just corresponded and shared information via emails.

For example, I cannot find the place on WikiTree where my contact with you is stored, if indeed it is, and consequently cannot recall which Esther we are now discussing. After uploading my tree I sent messages to all the people on WikiTree who had a shared person on their trees and yours was therefore one of half a dozen contacts I made yesterday. Can you please remind me of whom we are possibly both related and then I will be better able to enlighten you as to my relationship to that person.

155-158 01 Nov 1762 Michael Gill, Edward Langman, Arthur French, John Gale, George Olive, National Brooks, Esq. (St. John's) Court of Oyer and Terminer tries a case regarding the threatening and rape of Esther Merrifield, who is married to William Merrifield of Torbay. Grand Jury made up of 24 men. Jury made up of 12 men. Details of the court case and the circumstances of the rape are given. Her husband witnessed the rape. John Stackebald (or Stackbald-see page 164) and another man, whose name she did not know, were the rapists. Stackebald was found guilty and sentenced to execution by hanging.





164 09 Nov 1762 Gov. Thomas Graves (St. John's) John Batten, Esq. Sherriff Referencing the Court of Oyer and Terminer when John Stackbald (or Stackebald-see pages 155-158).was sentenced to death for raping Esther Merrifield (discussed on pages 155-158). Stackbald set the jail on fire in attempt to escape. He is therefore to be put to death in the manner directed.

I assume, but will check to be certain, that this information was attached to Mary Dooley's family tree on Ancestry. It came from the Colonial Secretary's Letterbook. 4305
