From recollections of Doris Alderdice MacGillivaary in 1994 recorded by Jean Carter Stirling:

"His mother [Sir Frederick Alderdice's], Kathleen Rachel (Kate) after Jim (Monroe) her brother died, went every second year to Ireland, and came back to the Alderdices, Nana's, every second year. She walked one mile every night IN THE HOUSE. She was a little person, high colour, round face; went to movies by herself; always had a flask of brandy with her, and would have a little swig now and then. She was 89 when she died."

Ed Roberts' bio from Peter Cashin's memoir "My Fight for Canada"

Monroe, Walter Stanley (1871-1952)
An Irishman, Monroe came to Newfoundland in 1888 and eventually
became a leading businessman in the Colony. He first stood for the House
of Assembly in 1923, against William Coaker, qv, in Bonavista Bay, and
was defeated. William Warren, qv, appointed Monroe as a Minister without
Portfolio in his short-lived administration. When Warren was forced out
of office by a vote of confidence in the House of Assembly and Albert E.
Hickman, qv, became Prime Minister, Monroe became Leader of the so-
called Liberal Conservative Party, a conservative group, which won the 1924
election. (Monroe was returned as one of the three Members for Bonavista
Bay.) PJC was one of the successful Liberal Conservative candidates in that
contest. Monroe remained as Prime Minister until 1928, when he retired,
to be succeeded by Frederick C. Alderdice, qv. Defeated in the General
Election in 1928, he accepted an appointment to the Legislative Council in
1933. He remained a member of the Council until it was dissolved upon the
advent of the Commission of Government.
