From Wikipedia:
Frederick Charles Alderdice (November 10, 1872 - February 26, 1936) was a Newfoundland businessman, politician and the last Prime Minister of Newfoundland. A prominent St. John's businessman, Alderdice was appointed to the Legislative Council of Newfoundland (the Upper House of the legislature) in 1924 and became leader of the Liberal-Conservative Progressive Party and the dominion's Prime Minister when his cousin Walter Stanley Monroe retired from the post in 1928. Alderdice's first term as Prime Minister was short-lived, however, as his government lost that year's general election to the Liberals led by Sir Richard Squires.
Alderdice joined with Liberals dissatisfied with Squires to form the United Newfoundland Party with himself as leader. The Great Depression embroiled the dominion in a severe economic crisis which was compounded by corruption in the Squires government taking the dominion to the brink of bankruptcy. Widespread unemployment added to the crisis and resulted in an anti-government riot in St. John's on April 5, 1932. The Squires government collapsed and Alderdice swept to power in the ensuing June election on the promise that if elected, his government would examine the possibility of suspending the constitution and having a commission administer the country until conditions improved. His United Newfoundland Party won 24 seats to only two for the Liberals.
The Alderdice government was unable to deal with the economic crisis and proposed a partial default on the dominion's debts. Britain and Canada (whose currency was shared by Newfoundland) agreed to give the dominion financial aid in exchange for the creation of an Imperial Royal Commission to investigate the dominion's future. The Commission recommended the suspension of responsible government and the institution of an appointed Commission of Government to rule the colony.
Alderdice was pressured by the British to accept the recommendations without calling a new election or submitting the proposals to a referendum. Alderdice agreed and, at the end of 1933, the legislature voted to accept the recommendations and voted itself out of existence. Alderdice was appointed to the Commission of Government when it was established in February 1934 and served as Commissioner for Home Affairs and Education in the new Commission of Government as well as Vice-Chairman until his death in 1936.
From Canadian Encyclopedia:
Alderdice, Frederick Charles Frederick Charles Alderdice, businessman, politician (b at Belfast, Ire 10 Nov 1872: d at St John's 26 Feb 1936). He was twice prime minister of Newfoundland, August-November 1928 and June 1932-February 1934, and the last person to hold that office before confederation with Canada. A prominent St John's businessman, he entered the Legislative Council in 1924 and assumed the Liberal-Conservative Party leadership and the prime ministership on the retirement of Walter MONROE in 1928. Alderdice was defeated by Richard SQUIRES in the ensuing general election but remained leader of the opposition United Newfoundland Party.
Newfoundland had been in financial difficulties since WWI and by 1932 international credit had all but disappeared. On 5 April 1932, in a climate of unemployment, widespread distress and accusations of government misconduct, there was rioting in St John's outside the legislature. The House was subsequently prorogued, and in the June elections Alderdice's party defeated Squires' 25 seats to 2.
With Newfoundland facing imminent bankruptcy, Alderdice appealed to Britain for financial aid and the appointment of a royal commission to consider Newfoundland's future. The resulting Amulree Report of 1933 recommended the temporary suspension of responsible government. The Newfoundland legislature agreed, and on 16 February 1934 a COMMISSION OF GOVERNMENT composed of 3 Newfoundlanders, 3 Britishers and the governor was instituted and continued for 15 years . Alderdice was appointed a commissioner.

In his book, "My Fight For Newfoundland", Peter Cashin doesn't mince words about Alderdice. He considered him a traitor to Newfoundland and also a self-serving politician who feathered his own nest whilst giving away Newfoundland sovereignty in return for a personal appointment to the new Commission of Government. Cashin's opinion is very biased, as were all of his opinions expressed in the book. Nevertheless, there is an element of truth to what he said in this regard. Neither Alderdice nor any of his confederates who took part in this sad affair ever attempted during the next 15 years to return Responsible Government to Newfoundland and when the time came to decide what to do with Newfoundland after WWII he and they did not stand by their commitment made at the time of dissolution of Responsible Government to put to a plebicite or referendum the matter of its return when Newfoundland's finances were once again stable. Ed Roberts, who edited these memoirs, had a somewhat more even handed view of Alderdice in the appendix which gave brief bios of the people mentioned in the book:"
"Alderdice, Frederick Charles (1872-1936). Alderdice, born in what is now Northern Ireland, came to Newfoundland in 1886 to work at the Colonial Cordage Company, owned by his uncle Moses Monroe. Appointed to the Legislative Council in 1924 by his cousin Walter Monroe, qv, then the Prime Minister, he became Prime Minister upon Monroe's resignation in August 1928. Alderdice led the newly renamed United Newfoundland Party (UNP) into the October 1928 General Election, and won a seat in St. John's West, although the UNP lost the election. Alderdice then became Leader of the Opposition.
In 1932, Alderdice and his Conservative colleagues won twenty-four of the twenty-seven seats in the House of Assembly, and he became Prime Minister for the second time. He accepted the British Government's offer to appoint a Royal Commission under the Chairmanship of Lord Amulree, qv, to examine the affairs of Newfoundland, and subsequently accepted its recommendations. Alderdice presided over the demise of Responsible Government, which was brought about by a favourable vote by the Members of the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council, and served as Commissioner for Home Affairs and Education in the Commission of Government after it was instituted in February 1934".
