Notes
General:
120915:
There seems to be some confusion in online records pertaining to the parents of the Josiah H. Penney who died at Beaumont Hamel. His military records do not give their names because they were deceased at the time of his enlistment and death but they do mention his brother, Frederick E., and his sister, S. Grace, and therefore he could be no other than the son, "Joe" of Capt. Josiah H. Penney and his wife Juliana Pike. But in some online accounts the name of the father is correct but his mother's name is stated to be Anna. This seems to be because there was another Josiah Penny [sic] whose parents were Josiah and Anna Penny. Both were from Carbonear and in all liklihood they were cousins. Caution needs to be observed therefore in accepting information online that may be pertaining to one or the other of these two men.
Josiah was noted as having a heart murmur at the time of his attestation by Cluny MacPherson, the medical officer, declared him medically fit for service. Later, in February 1916, he was sent back to Wandsworth Hospital with a "valvular heart disease, not serious". He was returned to service the next month. One can only wonder if this health problem may have contributed in any way to his becoming a victim of the attack at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916. He was not reported as "missing" to his family until July 31, 1916 and on November 23, 1916 the family received the letter sent to the families of all of the missing at the Battle of Beaumont Hamel informing them that these men were now considered victims of the battle and were no longer considered "missing" as this might lead to the false hope that they were taken prisoners of war (no Newfoundland soldier was taken prisoner of war at that battle).
A letter was sent to his brother-in-law, E. W. Taylor (Reid Nfld. Co.) on 10 Feb 1917, informing him that the personal effects, if any, as well as the contents of his account with the Regiment, would be forwarded in due course.
On July 9, 1917, a letter enclosing a cheque for $35.41 was sent to his sister, S. Grace Penney, though they mistakenly thought that she was his mother. Efforts were made to obtain a separation allowance for her as she had been totally dependent upon Josiah for her living after the death of her parents. These efforts were eventually successful, though it was observed that whilst she had moved into town to live with her sister and brother-in-law (E. W. Taylor) at 14 Gower St., the family was still maintaining the home in Carbonear and her brother-in-law was a senior officer with Reid Nfld. Co. to whom she should have been able to turn for some financial assistance. However by the time that the pension was approved she had moved to Canada to live with relatives who took her in.
Josiah's body never was recovered and his name therefore appears on the monument at Beaumont Hamel that records the names of those with no known graves.
