1794 June 6 A Dau'r to WM. & CATH'E SWEETLAND of Eng'h Harb'r in this this District, Pub'y Named MARY BESTON (?), Aged 6 Yrs (?)

I believe the above transcription is in error that she was in fact 6 months old at the time of christening. Other siblings are shown in this same book ahead of her and this would make her older than they. I would not make sense that she would have been christened after her younger siblings. I am therefore changing her approximate birth date accordingly at this time.

It would appear from this that she never married and given that she left a Will she must have been fairly well-to-do.

161106:

In the 1851 Census she was unfortunately visiting some unknown acquaintance and not at home so we dont really know where "home" was at that time except that her will noted she was in Dartmouth. The will had her middle name spelled Morry while the Census had it as Morey. I'm leaving it as Morry for now. It shows her birthplace as Dartington (near Totnes) but I believe that was an error on the part of the Census taker (It was the birthplace of the next person on the list, a servant, and probably got carried over to Mary by accident..

051206: Email from Enid O'Brien indicates that according to the gravestone transcriptions taken down by a Mrs. Grey in 1937 (information recorded by Nimshi Crewe) she was evidently buried in the same plot with her sister Priscilla Sweetland Silly: "Also, Mary Morry Sweetland who died 1854, age 33 years."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

161206: It is interesting that her Will was witnessed by Noah Clift and Sarah Weekes. These two are both rather distant relations via the Grahams, Noah being a first cousin, once removed, and Sarah being a second cousin. While these families may have been very close, and while she may not have had other living relations close by, other than her sister, who could not witness the will since she was both the Heir and Executrix, I find it odd that she would choose these two to witness her Will. She had a living brother for example, though he may have been in India at the time. I have a feeling that she may have had a falling out with her closer relations and distrusted them. Her own father is reported to have abandoned his wife and family and this could have had a divisive effect on the various family members.

I have just learned that, despite the fact that she is remembered on the stone of her sister, Priscilla, along with many others as noted above, the gravestone transcript of the St. Clement Churchyard in the directory of the graves found on the Dartmouth History Group's website, http://www.dartmouth-history.org.uk/dartmouth/main.asp. does not include the names of any of the others mentioned above. It is possible the stone is too badly deteriorated to read. I did not know it was at St. Clement's and therefore did not try to find it on my visit in April 2017.

190916:
Magistrate William Sweetland kept a diary during his years in Bonavista and it is available online in the MUN Digitial Archive Initiative both as images of the pages and as a transcript. Between October 21 and November 21, 1850, he was visiting in St. John's and remarked upon information given to him from unnamed people in Ferryland concerning members of his family:

"during my stay at Saint Johns I met some of my Friends or rather Ferryland Relatives from one of whom I gleaned some Information relative to my Family. William was expected in England from India to arrange about carrying out a Rail Road in India. Mat was supposed to have been at Hong Cong two years since and at St Francisco in August last where a vessel had arrived from India or Australia, Sweetland Master, whom I have not a doubt is Matthew."

Ironically, both of these sons died plying their respective careers, Matthew drowning at sea and William dying in India, or an area of what was then India but is now Bangladesh.

"Matthew Morry Sweetland my Second Son died on his return passage
from Sierra Leon to London on 29th July 1852 aged 39 years 7 mos
He was never married that I am aware of"

Absence of evidence is generally not recommended to be taken as proof of a hypothesis, but UK church records are so reliable I think we can safely say that the lack of any christening/birth records for children of this couple means that they never had any.

The marriage was registered at Totnes, where I found it, but Jennie Crisp indicates the actual location of the event was St. Saviour's.

Notes
General:
In email from Enid O'Brien in 2002: "Priscilla Sweetland (1818) died 1827, age 28 years (this would mean she was born in 1815, even though her christening was in 1818). wife of Thomas Scilly (ref. Mrs. Grey's St. Saviour's gravestone data)."

Email from Enid O'Brien 051206: Enid corrected 2 errors in the earlier information - she died 1847 and her husband's name was spelled Silly. She gave this as a transcript of Priscilla's gravestone as taken down by the mysterious spinster Mrs. Grey in 1937 according to Nimshi Crewe:

"Priscilla, wife of Thomas Silly died 1847 age 28 years; also, Benjamin Sweetland, her brother, who with wife and child were lost at sea Sept 1846, age 32 years."

The Dartmouth History Group's website has a transcript of burials at St. Clement Churchyard which includes the stone given above, thought not all of the people named on it. I did not know this during my visit this year and therefore did not personally see the stone and verify its condition. All the website shows is that Priscilla and her sister Mary "Moray" Sweetland are found in the same plot. Note that both of her names are misspelled in the transcript which may explain why I never found this information previously.
