Edward Dalton Shea
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hon. Sir Edward Dalton Shea (June 29, 1820 – January 8, 1913) was a journalist and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Ferryland in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1855 to 1865 as a Liberal and then Conservative member.

Career
He was born in St. John's, the son of Henry Shea, an Irish-born merchant, and Eleanor Ryan. After completing his education, in 1836, he entered work in his father's business. In 1846, Shea became editor and publisher for The Newfoundlander, which had been previously edited by his brothers William Richard and Ambrose. He married Gertrude Corbett in 1849. Shea and his brother Ambrose became Conservatives in 1865 and he was named financial secretary for Newfoundland. In 1866, he was named to the Legislative Council of Newfoundland. Shea ran unsuccessfully for reelection to the assembly in 1873. In 1874, he was named colonial secretary. In 1886, he was named president of the Legislative Council, serving until 1912, and cashier for the Newfoundland Savings Bank, retaining that position until 1905. Shea was made a knight bachelor on 14 August 1902,[1] after the honour had been announced in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26 June 1902.[2]

He died in St. John's at the age of 92 in 1913.

Family
His son George Shea also served in the Newfoundland assembly.

His daughter Emily Shea, who was born and educated in Newfoundland, married, 1881, Captain Henry Moore Jackson, R.A., a son of the Bishop of Antigua. Emily's husband was created a C.M.G. in 1892, a K.C.M.G. in 1899, became Governor of the Leeward Islands in 1901, and Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific in 1902.[3]

An Article by Melvin Baker: "TO SOME OLD AND LOYAL FRIENDS": TRIBUTES BY SIR WILLIAM COAKER IN THE FISHERMEN'S ADVOCATE" '96 PART 2

15. Hon. George Shea ( Fishermen's Advocate 21 September 1932)
On Tuesday of last week the spirit of the Hon. George Shea took its departure from its mortal dwelling after a residence in it of some 82 years. Mr. Shea was the son of Sir Edward Shea, formerly President of the Legislative Council and Governor of the Government Savings Bank, and nephew of Sir Ambrose Shea, the famous public man of two generations ago, who became Governor of the Bahamas Islands. In 1886 Hon. George Shea became a member of the House of Assembly for Ferryland, and subsequently served in the same capacity for St. John's East. He became an Executive member of the Bond Government thirty two years ago, and in 1919 occupied a similar position with the Squires' Administration. He was also an Executive member of the Government during the term of Mr. [William] Warren's Administration. He sat with me in Council from 1919 to 1923 under Sir Richard Squires, and in 1924 under Mr. Warren. He was a splendid Executive Member. He knew the country well, was conversant with public affairs, and knew a good deal of the inside history of parties, politicians and the country. He was always broad, fair and reasonable in his decisions and in his discussions. He was absolutely reliable and could be trusted to do what was right in every matter, and his opinion was valued by his Executive associates. He was Leader of the Upper House during
the first regime of Sir Richard Squires.

I held Mr. Shea in the highest esteem. He lived a useful life and passed out a venerable age, highly regarded and esteemed. If his only son, Ambrose, can measure up to the high sterling qualities of his sire, he will also bring lustre and esteem to the honoured and respected Shea family. This country feels proud of the Shea family, and prouder of its achievements and activities for the public welfare. My feeling is, that each generation lacks that something that produced in the prior
generations characteristics of outstanding merit so hard to locate in the present generation. Where are the successors of Sir Ambrose Shea, of Sir Edward Shea and his son, of whose decease we write today? There seems to much more education and very much more time for absorbing it, than was available in the days of Sir Ambrose Shea, but the article turned out today in my opinion no way equals the old, sterling qualities, and practical experience and common sense of the older generations.

And this from Wikipedia:

George Edward Shea (July 4, 1851 – September 13, 1932) was a Newfoundland politician who served as the first mayor of St. John's, Newfoundland (present-day Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada).

The son of Gertrude Corbett and Edward D. Shea, he was born in St. John's and was educated there and at Ampleforth College in England. He was married twice: first to Louisa Catherine Pinsent in 1888 and then to Margaret Rendell in 1900.

In 1870, Shea became a clerk in the family business, Shea and Company. The company was shipping agent for the Allan Line of Royal Mail Steamships and the Ross Steamship Line. In 1887, when his uncle Ambrose Shea was appointed governor of the Bahamas, George replaced him as the firm's managing partner.[1] He was later an agent for the North British Mercantile Insurance Company and a member of the Newfoundland Board of Revenue.

In 1885, Shea ran for the Ferryland seat in the Newfoundland assembly as a Liberal; his father had also represented Ferryland in the assembly. He was elected by acclamation as a supporter of Ambrose Shea, who led the Catholic-Liberal party in a highly sectarian contest. Shea was re-elected as an independent in 1889, but was defeated by Liberal candidates Michael Cashin and Daniel J. Greene in 1893. Again elected to the Newfoundland assembly for Ferryland in 1897, Shea served for two years as minister without portfolio in the government of Sir James Spearman Winter. He did not run for reelection to the assembly in 1900. In 1902 Shea was elected as the first mayor of St. John's. During his term, he improved the water system and helped bring the city's finances under control. Shea served as mayor until 1906, when he was defeated by lawyer Michael Gibbs.

He had meanwhile re-entered the House of Assembly in 1904 as the Liberal representative for the district of St. John's East. He served as minister without portfolio in the government of Sir Robert Bond from 1904 to 1909 and was re-elected in 1908 and 1909. After Bond decided against a return to politics in 1917 and 1918, Shea endorsed Richard Squires and the Liberal Reform Party. Shea retired from business in 1919 and the following year was appointed by Squires to the Legislative Council. He occasionally served as acting Prime Minister in Squire's absence.

He also served on the board of governors of the Newfoundland Savings Bank and as chair of the Permanent Marine Disasters Fund Committee.

Shea died in St. John's at the age of 81.
