Notes
General:
Email from Andrea Tarvin 210207: After consulting with Marie Skiffington whose dates differed from those of Andrea this is the conclusion:
"Winnifred Shea McNamara - Born August 29, 1906 - Died October 2, 1980 She was 74 when she died and I am absolutely sure this is accurate...I lived with her my whole life and remember the day she died well. The census for Pouch Cove in 1921 also confirms this...but has the day of her birthday wrong."
Email from Andrea Tarvin 230207: "My grandmother Winnifred McNamara was the Exclusive Agent for National Distillers for the distribution of American liquors to all the military bases in the province...nice little stint. After they pulled outof here she retired early and went on to become the first woman in NLto be inducted into the NL Sports Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in golf and curling. I have attached a picture of the house we lived in until 1972. My grandparents bought that house for $20,000 and itis for sale now for $423,500. That is one house that wasn't allowed to fall down and is now deemed a heritage building. I will send a real picture later but for now it is a sketch and the address is 4 Park Place, Rennies Mill Road.

Inducted into the NL Sport Hall of Fame November, 1983
Winifred 'Win' McNamara is the first female to be voted into the provincial hall of fame, after a remarkable career in golf and curling. She was provincial golf champion in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976, and 1977, she lived in Florida in 1973 and 1974. She was a member of the Newfoundland team at national amateur and senior competition for 15 years and a member of the Bally Haly team that won the gross score provincial tournaments from 1970 to 1979. She served as president of the provincial golf association and was an executive member for eight years and filled the important role of chairman of the organizing committee when the first national ladies golf championships were held in St. John's in 1979. In curling, she skipped many rinks from Bally Haly during the 1960's and 1970's and participated in many provincial and inter-town bonspiels. In 1965 she skipped the inter-town championship rink and headed rinks that won the Chalker Cup in 1968, the Landrigan Cup in 1979 and the Bally Haly Ladies Championship in 1980. Her last official duties for the C.L.G.A. was the role of Tournament Chairman for the National Amateur played at Bally Haly in 1979. The very first national golfing event ever played in Newfoundland was a proud moment for Win.
During and after WWII Win was the exclusive agent for National Distillers in NYC and was responsible for the purchase and distribution of all alcoholic beverages to every United States military base in the province, also the first woman in NL to have this type of career.
Win is missed not only for her talents on the rinks and courses of her province, but also for her ready wit and humour. Her humourous stories were a source of delight to her listeners and nobody could spin a Newfoundland joke any better than she did.
