General:
290513 from Dictionary of Newfoundland and Labrador Biography:
BOWRING,BENJAMIN (1778-1846). baptized Exeter, England 17 May; established business on own account 1811; d Liverpool, England 1 June. Bowring came to Newfoundland in 1811 to pursue his watchmaking trade. After several subsequent visits, in 1816 he brought out his family and set up permanent residence in St. John's. With the help of his wife, Charlotte, Bowring established a small dry goods store which grew by 1834 into one of the town's largest fish export and supply firms. In that year he retired to Liverpool and created a new trading company to handle the English side of the Newfoundland business. Out of these business activities there emerged by mid-century the firm of Bowring Brothers in St John's and C. T. Bowring and Co in England. During the 1820s Bowring supported the agitation for a colonial legislature for Newfoundland, which was granted in 1832. By 1834 he had come to doubt the wisdom of this move, given the difficulties sectarian animosities had created for the colony. MB
