Bowring, Sir Edgar Rennie (1858-1943), industrialist, was born at St. John's, Newfoundland, on August 17, 1858, the son of John Bowring and Mary Rennie. He was educated at Bishop Feild College, St. John's, and Liverpool and Scarborough, England. In 1891 he became director of Bowring Brothers, Ltd., steamship owners and agents. He was appointed to the legislative council in 1897, was a member of the Dominion's Royal Commission in 1912, and was the first high commissioner for Newfoundland (1918-22). [In 1911, on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of Bowring Brothers in Newfoundland, he donated $50,000 to create a memento for the event. This eventually became Bowring Park, one of the loveliest and largest of the public parks of St. John's.] He was created a knight bachelor in 1915. He died on June 23, 1943. In 1888 he married Flora Munn, daughter of the Hon. James Clift.

280513 from Dictionary of Newfoundland and Labrador Biography:

BOWRING, EDGAR RENNIE (1858-1943). b. St John's 17 Aug; manager Bowring Brothers Ltd 1890-1918; KB 1915, KCMG 1935; Newfoundland High Commissioner to Great Britain 1918-22, 1933-34; d London, England 23 June. Bowring became manager of Bowring Brothers following the death of his cousin, Charles R. Bowring, in 1890. He expanded the firm's already substantial involvement in the island's fisheries, as well as its general trade, and in 1904 received a contract to provide a coastal steamship service from the Newfoundland government. To celebrate the anniversary of his family's business in Newfoundland in 1911, Bowring donated $50,000 for the creation of a park in the west end of St John's (Bowring Park) and provided $11,000 for the purchase of land on Water Street for the construction of a Seamen's Institute. In 1918 he provided a building in St. John's for use as a convalescent home for returning war veterans. MB

191213:
He died in London while staying at the Hyde Park Hotel according to the Probate record and his estate was valued at 418,695 pounds, 0 shillings and 4 pence, to be absolutely precise! That was an awesome amount of money in those days. The widow of his step son, Alice May Munn and Frederick Clive Bowring and Edgard Rennie Bowring, Ship Owners, were accorded probate in concert with Barclays Bank.

0113134:
His bios above fail to mention the important role he played as Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Patriotic Association of Newfoundland which financed the Newfoundland Regiment at the outset of WWI. He also personally contributed the funds to raise the monument to the "Fighting Newfoundlander" in Bowering park in honour of the fallen in WWI. (cf. G. W. R. Nicholson, The Fighting Newfoundlander)
