This information is found on the family tree placed on Genes Reunited by Margaret [Hines] Murray. She contacted me as a result of a "hot match" between our family trees on 16 March 2009. I am going to continue to pursue this relationship with her because there seem to be significant gaps in the proof of the identity of this person and hence the connection to the line that includes Mary Hannah Goss.
"Jonathan arrived in Sydney, Australia, in Jan 1836, on the "Beagle" with Charles Darwin , though we don't know where he boarded. (It is just possible that he jumped ship from an unhappy situation on board the "Rose", a whaler from Halifax, that was anchored near the "Beagle" in Auckland Harbour. There was much communication between both Captains as recorded in the "Beagle's" logs. Please note....this is just supposition). His death cert gives his birthplace as Newfoundland, and his age at death on 11 Jan 1857 as 57, so unless his birthday was in the first eleven days of the year, that would make 1799 his year of birth. According to stories passed down through the family, he ran away from home after an enormous fight with his father, and he never wanted to be found. One day when he saw a ship called the "Jonathan Bradbury" anchored in Sydney, he went into hiding, thinking his father had come looking for him. He was a ship builder/shipwright in Sydney who built and owned a boat or boats that took salt and other supplies up and down the Parramatta River. We know he had one called "Floreat", as his grandson, also Jonathan Bradbury, named his house after it. He married a convict, Elizabeth Haigh, a few months after arriving in Australia. He died of phthisis, an old word for TB, and he had rheumatism. He is buried in the old St John's Cemetery at Parramatta, now very near to a Westfield Shopping Centre. In fact it is a very beautiful and peaceful place. It is the oldest european cemetery in Australia, opening in 1790, just 2 years after the arrival of the First Fleet. It is surrounded by a high wall of handmade bricks which was built by convicts. It is a heritage site and has large shade trees, and lots of mown grass, as so many of the headstones no longer exist. His grave is just a few metres away from that of the first Surveyor General in Australia, who planned Sydney town."
060114:
I remain unconvinced that the Jonathan Bradbury who married the convict Elizabeth Haigh in Sydney, Australia was the same man who was the son of Jonathan Bradbury and Hanna (or Anna) Cox in Torbay, Newfoundland. I've seen what evidence there is online and it is scant. The name is the same but I have yet to find any indication that the Jonathan who wound up in Australia came from Newfoundland. Margaret's story seems to be based on a great deal of family lore and suppostion. I will leave this marriage in the file for now and maybe at some future date the connection will be proved or disproved.
