130705:

I have seen a legible photocopy of the baptismal record from Holy Trinity Church in Torbay at PANL. It reads:

"Baptisms 1854 December 3 Baptised Samuel of Will Goss and Maria Codner; spn (sponsors) James Warren and Bridget Goss."

The Initials of the priest are underneath and look like E.M.

It is easy to see why the spelling of the surname could have been changed and confused during this time because in the Church record the priest uses the old fashioned way of making an "s" when there are two "s"s in a word so it kind of looks like Gofs.

030711: Left one fith share of estate of sister Emma Ann White in March 1911. The five heirs were: Samuel Goss, Thomas Goss, Mary Hannah Wheeler, Margaret Day and Elizabeeth Gushue. The estate was valued at $2779.52 but bequests to various religious organistaions took a good portion of that amount. Presumably other brothers and sisters died before this date.

Marriage Events

• Minister/Priest: Walter Pine, 20 Nov 1785, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 220119:

I believe that this marriage was celebrated at the Anglican Cathedral and not in Torbay. According to informaiton online, although the burials in the Old St. Nicholas Cemetery in Torbay date back to 1674, it was not until July 10, 1827 that Bishop Inglis from Nova Scotia consecrated the cemetery and the church. It is not stated when the church itself was constructed but evidence exists for other outport Anglican churches that they were built in haste to be consecrated by the bishop from Nova Scotia during one of several visits in the late 1820s and early 1830s. It is unlikely therefore that there was a church in Torbay as early as 1785.

Events

• Religion: Anglican, possibly converted to RC after marriage. Anglican but may have converted to RC as he is buried in the old RC Cemetery in Torbay.

• Alt. Birth: 9 Jan 1791, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Date comes from multiple sources in the form of family trees on Ancestry, but it is likely one is simply copying off the other so I do not know the original source or its reliability. I think that they are assuming date of Christening and date of birth are the same. They are not.

• Religion: Converted To Roman Catholic, 1832.

Email from Ed Goss 01/10/01:

"As to the conversion of the Torbay Gosses to R.C., you are right that, as regards the direct line that comes down to you and me, the conversion occurred when Samuel Goss married Ellen Power, an R.C. girl, in 1816 and agreed to baptise and raise their children R.C. We believe, however, that Samuel did not actually convert until 1832. But it is certain that hedid convert. He died in 1853 and is buried in the old Torbay R.C. cemetery. His gravestone can still be seen there."
