From the Miscellaneous Deeds and Wills collection (GN169) at The Rooms:
Vol. 8, Page 202
This document is different from those preceding in that it is not an indenture of any kind but rather a receipt. But what is much more remarkable is the sum for which the receipt is granted: £23,450 13 Shillings and 7 Pence! This would have been worth a king's ransom in those days. It was being paid by Christopher J. Broom, a prominent St. John's merchant, to Peter Weston Carter as Registrar of the Vice-Admiralty Court, but the reason for the payment is not made clear. If this was a form of payment of duty on goods imported then the value of those goods must have been staggering indeed. It is hard to imagine that the entire annual budget for the colony could have been much more than this amount at the time.
Receipt Peter W Carter from Christopher J Broom 11 Dec 1812

In an article entitled "The Newfoundland Connection to a Nobel Laureate" by James P. Feehan in the Newfoundland Advocate, Vol. 109 # 3 2016/2017, it is mooted that, whilst the marriage took place in Poole, there is reason to suspect that both the husband and wife were born in Newfoundland. This seems to be strictly speculative and is not in accord with other evidence. The speculation is based on the fact that John's father was based in St. John's at about the time of John's birth as the surgeon to the St. John's Garrison and Mary had a connection to Newfoundland because the Joliffe family was involved in the fishery there.

301216:
I have not seen the register record myself and the above abbreviated version made it appear that it was Mary Spurrier Williams who was the native of Poole, Dorset, when in fact it was her father who was from that port. Later evidence has shown that she was apparently born in St. John's in 1783.
