150112:

It bears noting that the Anglican cathedral records show a marriage between a Richard Vicars Esq. (Lieut. in the Royal Engineers) and a Marianne Spanier (?) Williams on June 1, 1819. This is very confusing because the information I had received earlier indicated that she married a Rev. Johnston Vicars. I wonder if the two men were brothers and one died and she married the other. William Carter and Mary Brooking were the witnesses and there is an annotation that the marriage took place with the approval of the parents seeming to imply that the bride was underaged or else that it was indeed a case of one woman marrying two brothers in succession and her parents needing to approve of that odd situation.

I have checked and the Rev. Vicars lived much later so I think this was an error and I have added the name of Richard Vicars as her spouse.

301216:

At the time of the death of Marianne Spurrier [Williams] Vicars it was reported in the obituary in the Evening Telegram that four Newfoundlanders attended her funeral in England including a "Mrs. Morrey". This would have been the wife of Thomas Graham Morry, Eliza Shirley Hutchings Le Messurier. The latter was her first cousin, once removed. Also attending was her nephew, Mr. Justice Pinsent, later Sir Robert Pinsent. Another attendee was her niece Mrs Henry (Louisa Mary Blackman) Alsop and the latter's brother, the Reverand Dr. Thomas Blackman. There is no accounting for why all these Newfoundlanders happened to be in England for the funeral; some were clearly resident there but it is possible the funeral was delayed for the arrival of some of the others, though it would have taken 10 days to travel from Newfoundland to England in those days.
