From descendants of William Ebsary family tree on Angelfire:

After the fire in 1892, the Lewis' purchased property on the intersection of Wood and Duckworth Street in St. John's. Their home overlooked the Harbour Entrance and his pilot boat [Eusebius James Lewis] was moored at Queen's Wharf. A grocery store was opened that expanded into two adjacent properties. Their daughter Sarah (b May 5 1880) and her husband Robert Caines eventually inherited the property. Until recently, this grocery was operated by Stan Caines.

110619:

From the 1921 Census it would appear that some of the names of the children which i have extracted from the above family tree are incorrect. Specifically, Ruth, Emile, Stan and Theodore do not appear on that census. But Stan died at 2 months in 1916 so that can be explained whilst the absence of the other two cannot.

Note that at this time they shared their accommodation with the widow, Annie Lewis and her nephews William Lewis and George Lewis and granddaughter, Mina Brown.

Downtown Business Owner Fondly Remembered
March 17, 2020 10:02 am

Well known St. John's grocer Stan Caines has died. He was 77.

Anyone who met Stan Caines will recall he always had a smile on his face as he worked around his family's store in downtown St. John's.

For almost seven decades, the Caines name was synonymous with the east end of Duckworth Street. Stan Caines' grandfather, Robert, started it way back in 1934 when he opened a soda shop and fruit stand. According to family members, shortly after, he expanded to include groceries – and the rest is history.

Robert's son, Eric took over the business and eventually, in 1983, Stan became the third generation owner of the well known grocery and confectionery – or groc and conf as they are affectionately known.

The store remained in the family until 2003 when Stan and his wife, Fredi, made the difficult decision to sell. The new owners kept the name on the sign out front, but for the first time in 69 years a Caines did not own the establishment.

Stan Caines passed away on March 12th. A celebration of his life was held this past Sunday in Fermuse.
