This child is known to have existed and perished in the fire that destroyed his father's house from a letter written by Robert Carter reporting that event which was published in the London Chronicle (see below).

Extract of a Letter from Mr. Robert Carter, dated at Ferryland in Newfoundland, Jan. 12, 1757: Source: The London Chronicle Vol 45, April 12-14, 1757. Transcribed and contributed by Linda Elkins-Schmit

"I have the great Misfortune to acquaint you, that on the 24th of last Month, by some Neglect in heating Mr. Benger's Oven, a terrible Fire broke out about One in the Morning. I was waked out of my Sleep, and ran thro' the Fire in my Shirt with two of my Children, my Wife followed in her Shift, but my Son, the Maid-Servant and an Apprentice-Boy were all consumed in the Flames, The Store-Houses and Dwelling Houses were all entirely destroyed; and all the Goods, Furniture, and Provisions whatever, for not a single Thing was saved. Valuing my Goods at prime Cost, I have lost full 2800l. exclusive of the Buildings, for I had in the Store 2400 Quintals of dry Fish, which I purposed to send to Spain in the Spring. Mr. Benger and his Family lost their All; and we were reduced to the greatest Distresses for Want of Provisions and Cloaths till we had a Supply from the neighbouring Harbours."

Notes

050812 from Ancestry.com:

Born in St Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on 3 Jul 1891 to George John Carter and Elizabeth Viola Goodridge. Alan George married Eda M Pittman. He passed away on 7 Jul 1970 in St Johns, Newfoundland And Labrador, Canada.

200116:
According to a descendant of the Sweetlands (Joyce Isabel R. Dunfield), referred to in a letter from Nimshi Crewe dated 20 February 1960 as Mrs. Heber Angel, 7 First Ave., St. John's, it was Alan Carter who was holding onto the Carter Diaries in those days. From him they would have transferred to his son John, who in turn made them available to Jean Carter Fox Stirling for transcribing and eventual donation (I believe) to The Rooms.
