Notes
General:
210710: There seems to be some discrepancy over where he came from. Some sources say he was direct from England but there is a birth record in the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's that I believe is he: "Aug 3 1800. John the son of John Codner by Grace his wife, of Torbay."

I am adding this Christening record for him for now.

020217:

I suspect that the Christening record is for the grandson of John the immigrant, not his son by the same name. It looks to me like I accidentally left out a generation so I am adding in another John as son of the immigrant John and making he and his wife Grace (?) the parents of this John.

Notes
General:
190710:

Various sources note that John had three sons and a daughter but only identify one son (William). I believe one of the other sons must have been John, the father of Maria.

020217:

Although I noted in his Immigration entry that he appeared to be the only Codner in Torbay at the time, I now think that unlikely as there were three Codners in the 1794-95 Census of St, John's and area (including Torbay) -- John, Merchant, John, Fisherman and William, Boatkeepter. The other two were presumably established adults. It is possible that they were this John's children, but I had later proposed dates for the births of his sons, John and William. This needs to be reexamined.
