Notes
General:
070310 from John McCafferty: Served in France during WWI (Argyll and Southern Highlanders)

130310: Information found on the Commonwealth Graves Commission website and on Rootsweb Docherty List indicates that two of David's sons (James and John) also served in France and James paid the supreme sacrifice. Less is known about the military records of David and John. The name Docherty by its various spellings was very common, even in the Argyll and Southern Highlanders, and it is difficult to tell which records may pertain to these two.

It appears that David was born in Scotland of an Irish mother and father. He was illegitimate so there is not much known about his father except that he declared his name to be Edward Docherty on his marriage registration. The surname was almost certainly not true but was used to cover up his illegitimacy. His father's Chrisitian name is presumed to be true lacking further informationa and his nationality is presumed to be Irish because it appears from the dates on census and birth information that Sarah immigrated to Scotland between the time that she conceived and bore David.

150310: John McCafferty provided the following information on the death of his grandfather: grandfather, David Docherty, died in 1945 and was buried in the Auld Aisle Cemetery, Kirkintilloch just prior to the end of WW2 - I attended, and still remember, his funeral."

***************** The medal card shown in the scrapbook would have been written out posthumously and presumably the medals were sent to his mother and father. Note that he had three regimental numbers (3035, 8598, 303111) for some reason, which has caused some confusion in locating information about him.

150310: John McCafferty provided the following information on these medals: " James (who was killed in France) did receive some medals which were lost in a fire in Glasgow in 1997 at my sister's house. Coincidentally, on the day of the fire, I had stopped in Glasgow, on my way home from my job in Borneo, and intended spending a few days with my sister. I had gone out that night to visit friends in Kirkintilloch and missed the excitement. Nothing was recovered after the fire including my luggage containing my passport, money, an assortment of expensive gifts and all my clothes." entry found on Ancestry.com under the heading of UK soldiers who died in WWI:

Notes

130310:

It seems that Sarah was born in Ireland and at a rather later than normal age for a first child (36) bore her only child, David, out of wedlock. The timing isn't certain but it would appear that she conceived in Ireland but the child was born in Scotland. Her name does not appear on the census in that year in Kirkintilloch, which was taken on April 2/3 1871, but that is where the boy was born on November 18 (see registration of birth). Being Catholic, this could mean she fled to escape the shame of an illegitimate child.

She worked as a cotton weaver and managed to provide the two of them with a home without any assistance from the father. David gave his father's name as Edward Docherty on his marriage registration, but most likely that was also to escape the shame of being illegitimate. While the father's name may have been Edward, his surname was almost certainly not Docherty as that was the mother's surname. There is no other record of this man and it does not appear that he contributed in any way to the upbringing of the child.

They moved quite a bit from census to census, never appearing at the same address twice, perhaps indicating that Sarah's income was not always sufficient to pay the rent. It would have been pretty rough for an unmarried woman to raise a child and hold a job in Victorian Scotland.

By the time he was 19, as reported on the 1891 census, David was contributing to the upkeep as a common labourer but it appears that Sarah was no longer working. She was 55 at the time and not really too old to be working, so she may have been in failing health already.

Sarah was alive at the time of her son's wedding in 1894 but died shortly afterwards on Dec. 26 1897 of heart failure.

Died at the home of her daughter Elsie McVEIGH in Liberty Street, Belmore. She was unconcious for some time; the sons and daughters had time to gather by the bedside. A period of laboured breathing eventually stopped. The silence in the room was broken by the urgent, appealing voice of her husband; quite strongly he called out the one word "Kate". Immediately Catherine stirred and continued breathing. Said the Irish priest Father Michael O'KELLY, who was also watching by the bedside, "You've called her back". Kate lived on perhaps one more day.
