Notes for ANN GORDON: Ann Oliphant was the daughter of General John Gordon, who was killed in the battle of Waterloo. There is a book written by James Scott Marshall, entitled "The Life and Times of Leith". In It, there is an article written by Mrs. Ann Oliphant in the Edinburgh Evening Courant; it reads: Mrs. Ann Oliphant on the Shore set up a boarding school for girls in 1794, and advertised in the Evening Courant.

Mrs. Ann Oliphant designs to set up a sewing school for white and colored seam, also washing and dressing. And ladies who will be so good as to entrust her with their children, may depend upon them being carefully waited upon. And those who choose to send their children in fromthe countryside, may have them accommodated with lodging and boarding, together with the best advise Mrs. Oliphant is capable of against the extravagancies of youth. She likewise proposes that those scholars that are boarders with her shall be taught Writing and Arithmetic within the house at her charge. Likewise ladies or others, who will be so good as to give her in seams, shall have them carefully done.

Those who incline her favor in this may call at William Oliphant's, Bulking Master on the Shore, near Barnie's Nook."

Ann Oliphant's death notice was listed in the South Leith Parish records, Edinburgh; it read:

March 7, 1793, Ann Oliphant relic to the deceased William Oliphant, Bulker on the Shore of Leith, Clofs Edin, Died of a decline of nature. Buried at the foot of their ground, foot S from the ground W of Mr. Thomson's ground. Aged 65 years.

It is probable that she was not 65 as reported because this would mean she bore her son at age 54!

Also, there is a discreancy between the date that she was supposed to have advertised her school and the year she was supposed to have died (the year before). Since I do not know which to believe, I have tentatively back dated her work as a school teacher to prior to her stated date of death.
