Notes

Notes for WILLIAM OLIPHANT from Anthony Oliphant's FTM paper file: Young William Oliphant, died in a house fire. As the story was told to me the two youngest of John Gordon Oliphant's children were at homewith the maid. All the other children had gone to a movie, and upon their return the house was on fire and one of the children was standingoutside. The maid had brought one of the children out and apparently went back in for William. It was believed that she was overcome by smoke and neither of them made it out. I was told the fire had been started by a gas stove that had been turned on, " possibly by one of the children. " The actual cause, which ignited the fire was undetermined."

From Anthony Oliphant's FTM paper file June 2001:

i. WILLIAM GORDON OLIPHANT2 SR., b. 1782, Perthshire, Scotland; d. July 27, 1836, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

2. WILLIAM GORDON OLIPHANT2 SR. (WILLIAM1 OLIPHANT) was born 1782 in Perthshire, Scotland, and died July 27, 1836 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He married JANE CUNDELL November 16, 1810 in South Leith Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. Jane Cundell Oliphant died June 2, 1835 in Charlottetown, PEI.

Notes for WILLIAM GORDON OLIPHANT SR:

William G. Oliphant's Obituary read;

Col. William Gordon Oliphant, of Bonnington Park near Edinburgh, died at 54 yrs of age, at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, The son of William Oliphant, Former H M Customs Officer at Leith, Scotland.

There is a problem with his year of birth and that of his mother because this would make her 54 at the time of his birth. Probably she was not 65 at the time of her death as reported in her death notice.

Notes for WILLIAM OLIPHANT:

William Oliphant was the Bulking Master on the Shore at Bonnington Park, Leith near Edinburgh, Scotland. It was told to me a prestige's position of the time, appointed by the Crown. As I understand it, you either had to be politically well connected, or related to have a position of this stature. However, he was also listed as a Book Seller in several documents found in the South Leith Parish Records.

William's death notice was listed in the South Leith Parish records, Edinburgh it read:

April 5, 1791, William Oliphant, Seat Bulker in Leith from Chambers Clofs Edin, Died of a decay of nature, Buried 8 yards North from the NW corner of Wilson the porter Dealers ground and 3 yards in from the E side of the walk. Aged 89 years.

Tony wrote this on Facebook in response to a posting by Edward Chafe that I reposted:

I found a Henry Chafe who left William Peter Oliphant as his power of attorney. He had quite the estate. Land in England, Australia, and Nfld. My great grandfather had a brother William Peter Oliphant who supposedly drowned in Aquaforte Nov 3, 1877. Oddly there was never a death notice or burial that I could find. However, not to long after, William Peter Oliphant married a Morrissey in St. John's and subsequently left for Auckland. Interestingly when the ship arrived at Auckland, she wasn't with him. He was a barrister of some kind. My thought was he might have had a falling out with the family over religion or something. You know how Peter Winsor and the rest of them were when they converted to Catholicism. The reason I bring this up is I'm curious if your friend Chafe is aware of this. I have copies of all the legal doc if interested.
