Having been wounded at Beaumont Hamel and not being able to get satisfactory treatment after being medically discharged, Gus wrote a friend, Mr. Pat Brien, Secretary of the Great War Veterans Association (GWVA), to seek his assistance:
Dated: July 8th l 20
Dear Pat;
Yours of the 3rd Inst. to hand, thank you for your assurance. I guess promises to have my case "pushed" is about all I shall ever get.
Re. the Militia Dept. having nothing but my word etc. For any sake, do they - I know you don't think I was in the dog gone Hospital as a Hoarder, or do they think I'm bluffing. All the information I can give is contained in my complaint to you. I could give more details but no more names.
As to my Medical Board, I was examined on Feb.24/20 by three Majors of R.A.M.C, howin hellam to "ken" their names? If I were a member of the "Great Militia Staff", I would tell you how to find par tic's, as I am, I respectfully suggest that you communicate with Lady Catherine Scott, Town Hall, Hawick (ye ken where auld Hawick is), who will give you at least a copy of my sheets. I have no doubt if high Com's Office inquired they could get the original, at least she told me she had received them from the Hospital. As
to where I was boarded. No. 15 Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh on Saturday Feb. 24/20, as I said before I don't know the Doctor's names, I only know that after an hour and a half they told me more than our so called Doctors have told me in three years.
No doubt it will take a few months to clear up my case, in 'meantime' I am getting fifteen Bucks per month pension, can nothing be done to give me a chance to live.
Say what, give me a wee bit advice, will you please?
I have tried nearly every other means to have my case looked into, do you think if I wrote a few bunches of facts to the press it would make our Doctor's etc. take me more seriously.
You know Pat I never objected to any treatment I received here. I went willingly to be ripped, though I knew they were wrong, and now I am so to speak turned down, just because of some whim or other of the Hoard or Individual.
I hope you are keeping well Pat, personally I am not able to leave my bed. 1 am having the Doctor first chance, and by the way will you kindly tell me if I must pay my Doctor's Bills for attendance now.
Good luck to you Sincerely yours (SG) Gus. Greene.

Peter Cashin records in his memoirs "My Fight for Newfoundland" that Gus was a leader of a mob (including Dad Morry) who opposed his election in 1928 and, in one instance, Cashin says he (Cashin) took an iron bar and knocked out Gus because he was threatening him, even though Gus was unarmed at the time and was likely still recoverning from his wounds and illness incurred in WWI. In Edward Roberts' notes in the appendix to the memoir he mentions that Cashin's son Michael told him that when Gus was in hospital dying Peter Cashin "befriended him and visited him frequently." Cashin was a very publicly "devout" Catholic and I suspect this had more to do with a guilty conscience than charity.

Here is his Military Medal commendation:
Military Medal
Action date, September 29th, 1918 - Kieberg Ridge. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on September 29th, 1918. During a nine and a half-mile advance East of Ypres, touch was lost with the troops on the left. This NCO at once pushed out his Lewis guns to protect the flank and later sent out a patrol and established touch. An enemy machine gun was holding up the left of the company and preventing further advance. Sgt. Greene with one man crawled forward to the flank and having advanced about 60yards opened fire on the hostile machine gun and killed the man at the gun. The enemy at once retreated and were shot down by Lewis gun. It was entirely due to this NCO's quickness of decision that the advance was no longer held up.
220816:
According to Richard Cramm in "The First Five Hundred", this is how he describtes Captain John Clift's action at Baleuil that won him the Military Cross: "Captain J. Clift, who commanded D Company, showed great judgement and ability in meeting the enemy onrush. He caught them in mass in the open, and had so arranged his men with Lewis guns that very few of the Germans escaped. More German infantry rushed up, however, and for a time it looked as though a part of the Battalion would be surrounded. A Company and half of B Company were deployed to the right, the other half of B Company being sent to fill a gap between A and D Companies. The left wing of D Company was being hard pressed, and showed signs of being turned, but again Captain Clift showed great presence of mind and initiative in handling a dangerous situation. He immediately extended his left, and as soon as C Company could be escheloned on the left flank, Captain Clift personally collected some remnants of the Northumberland Fusiliers and filled a gap between C and D Companies. By Captain Clift's great energy and ability, and the invincible courage of the men under him, the situation was saved. The Germans were only 25 yards from our line when they were stopped."
Though he does not mention him by name, it was at this same series of actions (in Paschendaele) that Sergeant G. L. Greene distinguished himself and won the Military Medal.

In my meeting with Chris Curran and Melvin Baker yesterday about the 3 Volume set of Robert Carter's diaries, Melvin told me that he got the first transcription of the diaries that he knew about (only a part of the full set) from Margaret O'Brien. Apparently her husband Ron got it in some of his business dealings but she did not know who gave it to him or who was responsible for the transcription.
I had previously shown a death date for her based on David Wells information but I must have had that wrong because she is shown as a survivor in the obituary of Clotilda O'Brien, her sister in law, today.
