On the Dartmouth Archives website they have a listing of memorials (not necessarily gravemarkers) to members of the congregation at St. Petrox. One of these, dated 1876, is dedicated to Amos and Elizabeth Peek. Almost certainly this is the same couple. But equally certainly they did not die in that year as it would make them almost 100 years old.

For reasons I am unable to explain, even though the monument above is at St. Petrox, I have discovered that there is a grave at St. Clements which indicates it contains the remains of their there unnamed children:

No names and no dates given. It seems likely that the reason they were buried there is because in the adjacent plot (261) there is a person named Susana Peek who died 12/12/1830 at the age of 35 and may have been the only survivin child of Amos and Elizabeth. I am putting her in the family for now tentatively. 4321

301106: Email from Margaret Dickson giving information gleaned from microfilms of church register:

Marriage at St Clem. 28.12.1815 She was Honour Caroline Morrey (which I believe will now firmly link her into the main tree. John Stanley was a Mariner. Marriage by licence, both of age... Witnesses...were Jn Downing and Anne (or Anna) Pike Downing. ..... source original registers. This brings yet another Downing link, presumably closely linked by all the intermarriages which happened.

131206: The IGI transcription of the original church baptismal record based on Aunt Jean's research gave Matthew Morrey and Mary Graham as parents. This is NOT factual. The original record is in the Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth, not St. Saviour. It gives "Mr. Morry" as the father (no Christian name). Matthew and Mary were not dissenters and would not have Christened some of their children at the Presbyterian church and some at St. Saviour.

Margaret Dickson has verified this. The church record reads: "0CT 4 1791 Honor Caroline daughter of Mr MORRY" Margaret Notes: "Note: There is NO documentary evidence to prove which Morry parents this girl belonged to (although we now know the trail of the tombstone). This IGI INFORMATION IS UNRELIABLE."

I agree and therefore am today removing Honor Caroline Morrey as a child of Matthew and Mary Graham and placing her as a child of Matthew's cousin, Richard. This conforms with the logic of those buried together at St. Clement church yard. Also, her birth name in the register is Morry, not Morrey, but the conventional spelling used in most documents by this family is Morrey and that is the one I am accepting.

090706:

Note that Aunt Jean had thought that this marriage to William Prin was a second marriage of the Mary who was a daughter of Matthew Morry, the immigrant to Newfoundland. Evidence provided by Margaret and Ray Dickson from the Devon Record office and Ray's family tree now suggests she was in error and that this is another Mary. However she could be a relative (cousin perhaps) as they were contemporary and lived in the same parish. We believe at this time that she was in fact the daughter of Richard Morey and Mary Downing (Donning). The maiden name of that Mary shows up subsequently in this family as a witness at a wedding and as a marriage partner so there was an obvious connection that lends credibility, but not proof, to the theory that the Mary Morrey who married William Prinn was in fact the daughter of Richard Morey and Mary Downing.

Email from Margaret Dickson 060706:

"PS The Richard Morrey who married Mary Downing (definitely transcribed as Downing, not Donning, as on IGI), on 27.12 1785, at St Saviours was a mariner. I still think its their daughter Mary who married William Prinn. An interesting clue is that a Susanna Downing married on 1.2.1791 at St Clement..... could have been sisters. She married a man called Nicholas Millward. The name Millward is a clue to something: 1) When the daughter of William Prinn and his wife Mary ( ie Mary Prinn) married William Downing in Dartmouth their first son was named William Millward Downing. Second son was Philip Henry Downing. William Downing (a sawyer) and his wife Mary (nee Prinn) lived in Torquay, Dartmouth then Kingsbridge. 2) One of the sons of Philip Henry Downing and his wife Catherine (nee Thompson) had Millward as a second name.

Why was this name of Millward so important in the family over 100 years?

Ethel May Downing was the first child of Philip Henry Downing, and she was Ray's grandmother."

Email from Margaret Dickson 180706:

"I still maintain that 'our' Mary was daughter of Richard Morrey and Mary Downing. In 1861 census 'our' Mary was noted on the Dartmouth census, living next door to her married daughter. She was 71 , therefore born abt 1790."

131206: Information provided by Margaret Dickson after personally scanning the microfiche of the original records of the Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth: "Oct 6 1789 Mary Daughter of Mr Morry". This is NOT the Mary who was daughter of Matthew and Mary Graham as Aunt Jean had recorded because they were not Presyterian - neither was baptised as such, nor were any of their other children and nor were they married or buried in that church. This mix-up needs to be rectified. There WAS a Mary, who was daughter of Matthew and Mary Graham and who married Arthur Kemp. We know that for certain. But this is NOT she. She did not marry for a second time to William Prinn as Aunt Jean's records show because Arthur Kemp was still living when the marriage of William Prinn to Mary Morrey was solemnsied, so it was a different Mary Morrey. Where Matthew and Mary Graham's daughter was baptised is still a mystery.

210111: To complicate matters, Familysearch.org shows this Mary as being the daughter of Matthew Morry and the Christening was found at the Presbyterian church dated 06 Oct 1789. No mother's name is given. Here are the particulars of this record: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C06354-1 System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 590688 Reference Number:

I personally think that the indexer had already seen records for Matthew Morry he or she was doing and read Mr. Morry as being short for Matthew. But it would be necessary to see an image of the original register to determine if this assumption is valid.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

250818:

Of course it is impossible to say with absolute certainty which "Mr. Morey" was the father of Mary in this register entry. But after much debate and consideration, Margaret Dickson had concluded that it was Richard Morrey, the ancestor of her husband, Ray. I mulled it over and at length agreed with her. But I still retain a measure of doubt since there a number of other Morry men in Dartmouth at that time raising families and it would seem to me likely that one of them must have married a woman who was a Dissenter, thus the reason for Mary and her sister, Honour Caroline, being Christened at the Flavel Congregational Meeting House. It occurs to me that it was not unlikely that this could have been Matthew Morry married to Mary Graham, since Mary Graham, just from her name, would have roots in Scotland and may have been Presbyterian in orientation. Countering this argument is the fact that we know that most of their other children were Christened at St. Saviour's. But there is still room for debate.

For this reason I am leaving the matter open and using this Christening record for both Marys for now.
