Regrettably, FindMyPast only has an image of the calendar and not the actual application which must be obtained either from the Trinity House archives or from the film made from it by FamilySearch which are not digitised at this time. Therefore, given the discrepancy between what is known about Mary Downing's date of Christening and presumed year of birth and the stated age at the time of this application it cannot be stated with full certainty that this applcation was made by her. But that said, it seems highly likely as there were only one or two women named Mary married to mariners named Richard Morey (by any spelling of the surname) in Dartmouth at this time.

We have no idea what relation if any Sarah Lines was to Mary. May have been a servant.

There was only one other Downing family in Slapton at the time of the Census and the woman was a widow and too young to be the mother of William.
