STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Richard Dennis Pettersen, 72, of Toms River, N.J., a retired social worker and former program director at Mount Loretto, died Friday at home, after a long battle with cancer.
Born and raised in New Brighton, he graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School.
Mr. Pettersen settled in Toms River six years ago.
He attended St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie, N.Y., where he majored in philosophy.
He was a child care worker at Mount Loretto in Pleasant Plains, where he directed programs. He then became a social worker for the Morris County jail system. He retired in 2003.
Affectionately known as "Pop," Mr. Pettersen was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and adored his family. He had a generous heart and soul whether you were family or not, they said.
He was an avid reader, loved to play golf, enjoyed watching CNN, and was fond of a cup of good hot tea.
While living on the Island, he was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh.
Mr. Pettersen was preceded in death by his grandson, Jake Petterson, in 2005.
Surviving are his daughter, Cecelia Pettersen-Zappola; his son, Erik R.; a sister, Carolyn Tillistrand; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be Saturday with a memorial mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Dunellen, N.J. Cremation was handled by Direct Cremations, Paterson, N.J.
