PROWSE, ROBERT (1798-1873). Merchant. Born Torquay, Devon. Married Jane Woodley; father of Daniel W. and Robert H. Prowse qqv. Prowse came to Newfoundland at the age 10 as youngest clerk in the firm of John Hill and Company. He later joined the firm of Brown, Hoyles and Company under John Duriscombe, head of the Port de Grave branch. Prowse was to wind up the Company's business at Port de Grave. He then took over the business himself, becoming a large dealer with the main St. John's firm, primarily in supplying the bank fishery. In 1837, after a fire destroyed his premises, stock and home in Port de Grave, Prowse moved to St. John's, re-establishing the business on Water Street. These premises were lost in the lire of 1846 but rebuilt soon afterward. His eldest son, also Robert, took an increasing role in the firm. which became known as R. Prowse and Son after 1850. In 1854 the senior Prowse retired to England. He died in Kent. D.W. Prowse ( 1895), George Story (1970), ET (Feb. 13, 1873). ACB
