Email from Enid O'Brien 230806:

"According to a book written by James Carter, Sheriff, "In the Wake of the Rising Sun" when he visited Topsham in 1911 P. 442 "Mr. Ross's homestead is still standing owned now by Dr. Few who, because of Ill health has given up practice. The property is up for sale. I was speaking to proprietor who showed me over the grounds. He inherited it through his wife a niece of Mr. Ross. A Mrs Wright is still living who was formerly a Miss Brand, cousin of Mrs. Ross, her husband was a clergyman. The place is in no way altered and is in good repair"

The house in question is Broadway House, 35 High Street, Topsham, Exeter EX3 0ED, England and nowadays is refurbished and luxury furnished rooms are rented out.

060906: In the Carter family tree ostensibly prepared for the family by Joey Smallwood someone has added the Christian name "Nicholas" in front of Ross's name. I have no idea who did this or whether they knew their facts but am adding it here pending proof.

2908110: The synopsis of the 1841 Census on Ancestry.com is not complete as it breaks up the household into pieces. It is necessary to view the two pages of the actual census record (see images) to get the whole picture. Francis was living with his wife, misidentified as "Hannah", his father-in-law, Nicholas Brand (also noted as independently wealthy in his own right), two children of Anna Maria's late brother Henry, Francis and Martha, and five servants.

160810: Obviously the "Nicholas" referred to above was in reference to the father-in-law, Nicholas Brand, not Ross. We now know his full name was Francis William Lock Ross. Jean Carter Stirling provided this additional information:

"Another relevant fact comes from the 1851 census at Topsham, Devon: 30 Broadway House Francis W.L.Ross, Head, Married, age 57, Landed Proprietor, born Hants Flythe Nicholas Brand, father, widower, age 90, retired surgeon, born Topsham There was also a daily governess and three servants (incl. butler) so obviously the family was well off at that time. Mr. Ross' wife, Anne Marie (Brand) Ross was not at home at the time of the census taking."

The place of birth implies he was not from Topsham as formerly thought. Jean has copied it down wrong. It is Hythe in Hampshire. so I am altering his place of birth from Topsham.

The last 3 were servants while Annie Monkton was listed as a visitor and Augusta Greatwood was listed as a cousin, presumably at least once removed, judging by her young age. Annie Monkton was a "daily governess" and may have been retained to care for Augusta in view of her tender age and being away from home. Nicholas was incorrectly listed as father rather than father in law of the head of household and his daughter is inexplicably absent from the house at the time of the census. Se was subsequently found to be visiting with her niece, Martha [Brand] Wright and her husband, Rev. The Will of Francis William Lock late of Topsham in the Count of Devon Esquire deceased who died on or about 25 December 1860 at Topsham aforesaid proved at Exeter by the oaths of Henry William Francis Greatwood of the Town of Usk in the County of Monmouth Surgeon and Anna Maria Ross of Topsham aforesaid Widow the Relict the Executors. Francis erected a memorial to honour his father and his family in Topsham Cemetery. Enid O'Brien found a transcript of the memorial. It reads as follows:
