James Martin Rouse (1771-1823) and his wife Anna (nee Upjohn; 1779-l846). His father's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had all been clergymen of the Church of England (see Appendix A), and after his father's death OR was educated at the Clergy Orphan's School, then at St. John's Wood, London.

This strange account of his death appeared in the Paterson Daily Press on Tues., Dec. 7, 1897:

"Could Not Stand the Shock
Chicago, Dec. 7. Rev. Dr. John Rouse, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, died from shock attending an operation for appendicitis. He was but 35 years of age and one of the most prominent of the younger clergymen in Chicago. He was a natived of Saint John, N.B., and was in the Episcopal cahedral in that city when he accepted a call from Trinity church seven years since."

To read the article literally it makes it sound as if he was witnessing the operation, not undergoing it himself. Note that they have confused Saint John N.B. with St. John's, Nfld.
