General:
04/03/03: The date of birth has been changed on the 1901 census record. It was originally given as 1858 and then changed to 1868. The age given was 29 but I believe this was simply calculated by the enumerator rather than being asked of the individual. My guess is that both she and her husband's dates of birth were correct on the census as originally entered but for some reason they were later changed and made incorrect.

Having discovered a photograph of Charlotte (Rouse) Windsor in the collection of Anna Elton Morris at the Centre for Newfoundland Studies, I began to try and determine who she might be. There are only two Charlotte Windsors in the family tree and one of them was born to that name, so this suggests that the only Charlotte whose surname I was not previously aware of must be Charlotte Rouse.

Prior to making this decision, all that I knew about the wife of Jacob Augustus Windsor based upon the 1901 Census was that her name was Charlotte A. and that her date of birth was given as 30 March 1858 and then " corrected" later to 30 March 1868, presumably to match more closely the age that the census taker had been given for her (29). Obviously date age dosen't conform with either date. If she was born on 30 March 1858 she should have been 42 or 43 on the census and if she was born on 30 March 1868 she would still have been either 32 or 33, so wrong in either case.

Charlotte Ann Rouse (note the middle name conforms with the initial I already had) was christened on 4 May 1856. I do not have a birth date for her, but since her father was the minister, we can assume there was no delay between birth and christening. So that makes here two years older again than the birth date given on the census form. People lied to census takers about their age regularly in those days so I am inclined to believe that this is the Charlotte Ann Rouse born in 1856.

During the Second World War Mrs. Windsor knitted sweaters for Allied servicemen, and must have been one of the world's champion knitters. In her ·flower-bordered cottage ... the war [was) fought with British obstinacy, steadily, relentlessly--with a knitting needle, to be sure, but with unflagging valor that weaves its own small effect toward victory". "She began to knit when British relief agencies first appealed to America's women shortly after the war began. Now her sweaters are sent to Allied agencies. They are given to Dutch, Chinese, English, American, French, Russian and other warriors according to need. She has received letters from recipients that indicate the garments are being worn in the far Arctic and foxholes of Italy.· These quotes corne from an article in the Santa Paula Chronicle for February 16, 1944, entitled "All over world servicemen get 'Windsorknit' sweaters"; by that date she had finished three hundred sweaters, and was turning out two completed sweaters per week! Over two years earlier a letter had come from Buckingham Palace (dated 27th October, 1941) in which the King's Private Secretary expressed the King's thanks to Mrs. Windsor for sending him the sixtieth sweater she had knitted for British Relief organizations. (The King gave it to the Queen, who was apparently in charge of such matters.)
