He was wounded in the hip and the bullet was so placed that it couldn't be removed and remained there for the rest of his life. Thereafter he walked with a cane. During the war he was reported missing and eventually found as a prisoner of war at Soltau, a German Prisoner of War Camp. 101118:
His military file shows that he left behind in Ayr, Scotland, THREE sweethearts, the first named Maggie Parker, the second named Jeanie Ritchie and the third named Esther Pettigrew. All three enquired, through intermediaries in the case of the first two (presumably they were illiterate) as to his welfare, first in May 1918 after he went missing and again on 21 August 1918 after he had been taken prisoner of war and presumably lost contact and thridly on Nov. 12 1918 when he was transferred back from the POW camp to Wandsworth Hospital in London.
111118:
Note that there is a discrepancy in his date of death between his military file which gives an exact date of 18 Sept. 1944 and the 1945 Census which shows that he was alive at that time. I suspect that the military file notation was off by a year at least but probably had the day and month correct.
