AYRE, LEWIS H.M. (1914- ). Businessman. Born St.John's. Son of Harold C and Agnes Marion (Miller) Ayre qv. Educated Methodist College, St. John's; Mostyn House School, Wreckin College, England. Ayre started working with Ayre and Sons Limited, his family's company, in 1931 and thereafter became active in business affairs. By 1980 he was Chairman of Ayre's Limited; Ayre and Sons Limited; Blue Buoy Foods Limited; and Newfoundland Telephone Company, Limited. In the same year he was a director of a number of Newfoundland companies including Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, Dominion Stores Limited, Labrador Mining and Exploration Limited and the Bank of Nova Scotia. Ayre was also the President of the Newfoundland Board of Trade from 1948 to 1949 and sat on the Board of Regents of Memorial University of Newfoundland from 1968 to 1974. He was a vice-president of the Canadian Cancer Society, an Honorary Life Member of that body and president of the Newfoundland Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. He was the first chairman of the St. John's Heritage Foundation and of the St. John's Transportation Commission and a member of the Newfoundland Royal Commissions on the Cost of Living and on Education and Youth. He was also made a Member of the Order of Canada. L.H.M.
