William Joseph Williams - (December 31, 1944 - December 10, 2025) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Joseph Williams, age 80 years, surrounded by his loving family at the Health Sciences Centre on December 10, 2025. Born Dec 31st, 1944, in Ferryland, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Arch and Veronica (Kavanagh) Williams.
Bill was predeceased by his parents; his mother and father in-law, Mary and Wilfred Costello; brother, Jack Williams; and sisters, Margaret Churchill and Maureen Ryan; sisters-in-law, Mary Williams and Lucy Costello; brothers in-law Tolson Churchill, Albert Venditello, Willie Costello, and Ken MacDonald; nephews, Craig Williams and Alfie Ryan.
Left with cherished and loving memories are his devoted and loving wife of 57 years, Doreen (nee Costello); children, Greg (Karen Dobbin), Dana (Rob Somers), Tara (Andy) Moore, David; beloved grandchildren, Noah (Anna Mercer), Ian (Liam MacAloney), Matthew (Gretchen Russell) Williams, Eliza (Matthew McCarthy), Amelia, Hayden Somers, sweet Senna Moore, and his grand dog, Rosie; brothers, Fred Williams, Reg Williams; sister, Rose Venditello; brother and sister in law, Jim and Carol Ann Costello, brother in law Donny Costello, and sister in law Marion MacDonald; a large circle of nieces and nephews; and his special group of grumpy old men - Ed, Bill and Jerry.
From an early age, Bill had a social, inquisitive, and curious nature, which probably influenced his decision to join the Canada Centennial Caravan in 1967 where he was able to meet and talk to people all across the country. Those attributes also proved to be very helpful in his career in the insurance industry, where his commitment and dedication to his clients built lifelong relationships. Bill was very at ease making conversation. He loved learning about people everywhere he went. Never did he pass up an opportunity to ask someone their name, where they were from, and if they knew someone he knew. His sense of humour, skill at telling a story or a joke, and his kindness endeared him to many - new friends and old. Later in life, his grandchildren were the joy of his life. Bill was eager to share stories with them, let them look through his basement of treasures, and occasionally let them take something home. He always wanted to know what they were doing and was very proud of each and everyone of them.
For 64 years, the main constant in Bill's life has been his precious Doreen, and through thick and thin they dedicated themselves to each other and to raising their family. While showing his feelings was not always a strength, his love for Doreen was undeniable. Bill was a great cook turning out big family dinners late into his 70s, and a self proclaimed foodie who would try anything. He loved a bargain and hated to pass by a garage sale; he never wanted to see things go to waste. He enjoyed working with the Commissionaires in his later years, and loved dropping a few coins in the VLTs, British/Irish tv shows, old movies, and Coronation Street.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Miller Center and the exceptional nursing, healthcare, and medical staff who cared for him on 5 South A of the Health Sciences Centre. A special thank you to Tina and Kim for their kindness and attention to care during his final few days.
Cremation has taken place. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Sunday, December 28 from 2 p.m. \endash 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. from Divine Mercy Parish, on Newfoundland Drive. Inurnment to follow at a later time in his beloved hometown of Ferryland.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to The Gathering Place.
