According to Laura Morry Williams in her book Over The Fence, Arch was already somewhat of an artist when he came under the tutelage of Gerald Squires. He also helped arrange Arch's firs showing at Memorial University Art Gallery in 1974. His primitive paintings are now on display in the Art Gallery of Newfoundland, The Canadian Museum of Civilisation and the Simon Fraser Gallery.
