Bettie Withell was from Padstow, Cornwall and a daughter of John Withell. John Withell was posted to Newfoundland with the Royal Engineers and became Clerk of Works. When he went to Ireland, his son Charles and his daughter Bessie remained in St John's. Charles married Mary Ann Wilkie, sister to my great grandmother Charlotte Augusta Wilkie, who married Samuel Carnell Collier.

Jean Carter Stirling, who is a great granddaughter of Bessie tells a different story. She says Bessie came to Newfoundland from Ireland and that her father was sent to Newfoundland by the War Department as a "Commissionaire". She notes that she and Gert Crosbie are related in that their grandmothers were both children of Bessie. Apparently they had a large family. Jean and Gert worked out the family tree for this line together.


!BACKGROUND: Bessie Withell was born in Padstow, Cornwall,
daughter of John Withell and Mary Peter; in the 1850's while in
her teens she came to Nfld. with her father who was employed
with the Engineers of the Imperial Troops; She married at 19, and die d at 67.
