Enid O'Brien email dated 7/03/02: Also, in Halleberton, Devon, Queen Eliz Lib.marriages vol. 1V, 16 April 1750. Md. Hugh Sweetland of Uffculme and Mary Wood. At PANL there is a letter from a Mr. Frank Wood "Thalassa" Strete, North Dartmouth, Devon (dated 16/9/1960) who looked up some church records at St. Saviour's Church. Date 15 Feb. 1810. Marriage between William Sweetland (Newfoundland bachelor) and Priscilla Morry (spinster). This entry was sent back Signed by Frank J. Wood, (organist) whose wife's maiden name was Sweetland and her late uncle was William Sweetland. Do you think there is a connection with the Mary Wood above??
My response: This business about a Hugh Sweetland marrying a Mary Wood in 1850 is curious. It obviously isn't Hugh, the father of Benjamin (and possibly David). It could be his son, likely a first son, as men in those days tended to be vain and name their first born sons after themselves. If so, he'd be ripe for marriage in 1850. Just for the heck of it I'm going to add him to the family tree with all these caveats attached.
By they way, I doubt there would be any connection between the latterday Mr. Frank Wood and this Mary Wood. That would mean his wife would descend from one partner in this marriage and he from the other. Awfully unlikely.
040818:
Putative Baltimore-Kirke-Sweetland family tree indicated he married twice but that all his issue were "extinct" at the time when the tree was created. The date is unknown for certain but clues suggest 1807 and it has been suggested that it was originally created by William Sweetland, born in Ferryland and later a Stipendiary Magistrate in Bonavista. 565
