Joseph Andrew Bulko Obituary
ANNAPOLIS, MD- Joseph Andrew Bulko, 87, of Annapolis, Md., died peacefully in his sleep Saturday Aug. 18, 2018.
He was born in Monessen, Pa., on May 16, 1931, the middle son of the late Andrew and Anna (Billy) Bulko. Joe was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War and assigned to the maintenance and repair of sensitive electronic equipment on Navy and Marine aircraft, working specifically on highly secretive aircraft Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponders.
His professional career focused on electronics and electrical engineering with RCA, the Communication Satellite Corporation (COMSAT), and the International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium (INTELSAT).
In July 1969, while on duty at COMSAT's Andover, Maine, satellite tracking station, Joe had the privilege of recording into the station's official log the successful Apollo 11 space flight mission with the simple statement, "Man has landed on the moon."
Joe was an avid tennis player from the age of 56 (when he was introduced to the sport) until well into his 83rd year, when the debilitating effects of a series of mini strokes forced him to put down his racket.
During his retirement years, he traveled to Slovakia as part of a Youngstown, Ohio, Sister Cities program, where he taught English to Slovak children and had the opportunity to visit and spend time with his many relatives living in that country. Arguably, the crown jewel of Joe's retirement years is his four-volume autobiography titled, Walls of Illusion, where he recounts the story of his personal and professional life beginning with his humble Depression-era immigrant upbringing.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by siblings, Andrew Bulko (Wilma) and Jean Rock; and he is survived by siblings, Veronica Forgus and Edward Bulko (Mariann).
He is survived also by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Morry Bulko; children, Joseph Patrick Bulko and Gina Bulko Aure; and three grandchildren. A graveside ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday September 12 at 1:00pm at Holy Name Cemetery in Monessen.
