Up until today I stood by a date of death that I had forever, and ignored the one that Jean Carter Stirling had given me. I now realise that she was right. Robert Carters Journal for 1842 settles it.
I don't know where I found that earlier date of death but I am making the change today.

I received a message on Ancestry from a person whose user name is caroanne1950. Her proper name is Carol Roane. This is what she said:
Re Morrys of Newfoundland family tree
I hope you dont mind me contacting you but I think you have the wrong wife for George Butler Bulley birth 15 Nov. 1794 West Teignmouth Devon Baptised 7 Feb. 1794 West Teignmouth He married Ann Northam 7 Jan. 1828 West Teignmouth Devon England George Bulley of this parish Sail Maker and Ann Northam of this parish by Licence both of age witnesses John Bulley and M. I responded:
Dear Carol Roane:
I would not be much of a genealogist if I was not delighted to hear from someone who has information that may correct an error in my family tree! So I thank you for taking the time to make contact and I hope that the two of us can sort out this conflict together. I find it awkward to work through Ancestry (or any other service for that matter) as opposed to one-on-one contact. I wonder would you be willing to connect with me via email at cjmorry@ncf.ca. I have a marriage record for my 1st cousin, 5 times removed, Eliza Howe Carter, to a George Bulley and it is very likely I chose the wrong man of this name since I did not research him very thoroughly. If you can provide alternative information on a marriage of George Butler Bulley that conflicts with the marriage I have for the man simply known as George Bulley I will be better able to make any needed corrections. As it happens, on the marriage record I have there are no others of the name Bulley as witnesses and hence I may have erred in choosing George Butler Bulley as the likely candidate. I look forward to hearing more from you. Thanks once again. Christopher Morry

Hi again
I have had a search for Eliza's husband George but I am not finding anything about him.
I see she married again in 1820 so they were not married very long, I have looked for a death too but found nothing Sorry I can't be of help If I come across him in my searches I will let you know I am compiling a dedicated Bulley family tree and they are popping up all over the place so he might just turn up Best wishes Carol Roane

I replied:
Hello Carol Roane:
Well now I guess you know what I grasped at straws and assumed that the only available George had to be the guy. There just don't seem to be any logical alternatives.
My guess is that even though he shows up in the register as "of this parish" in reality he was a sojourner, probably a mariner, and possibly even from Newfoundland, where the name is not uncommon, though often seen as Bully there.
Anyway, I will keep hunting but in the meantime disconnect Eliza from your man at least offline and eventually online when next I do updates.
Please keep me in mind if anything turns up on the real George.
Cheers
Christopher

So the end result is that I must now remove George Butler Bulley as the husband of Eliza and leave him only as an unknown man named George Bulley for now.

FindAGrave gives this enticing hint:
Capt George Bulley
BIRTHunknown
DEATH20 Dec 1817
BURIAL
St Mary Newington Churchyard
Newington, London Borough of Southwark, Greater London, England
MEMORIAL ID121904515 · View Source
The fact that he is a mariner and that Eliza's family were all mariners seems enticing but why would he be buried there and not in Exeter? Perhaps because of this note, which may or may not appear on the gravestone: "Of the Royal Navy. Died age 36 years." The age does not appear to conform with Eliza's husband however.

310121:
I am becoming more and more convinced that this George Bulley was from Newfoundland where the name was common in those days despite the fact that the marriage record said he was "of this parish". I cannot find any records of him in England. In Newfoundland I found this record of a lease on the NGB website under "Index of Miscellaneous Deeds and Wills (1744-1859 in 22 Volumes)
held at the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL):
1793L Bulley George to McDonald Michael 15 169 St. John's
Now clearly this could not have been the same man as he was only three at this time but it may very well be his father. Eliza's family was heavily involved in the mercantile enterprises in Newfoundland in those days and would have known this man and possibly been associated with him in business.
