290114 from Bob Hopkins:

In records given to me by my mother's sister, Joan Butler Hierlihy, there was an account of The Loss of the Mary, a schooner that was lost on the Grand Banks in about 1880. It was written by my Great Uncle, Jabez Butler to his Uncle James Winsor describing how they came to lose the vessel and describes their rescue by an ocean liner out of New York who took them to Liverpool England.

A curious thing about this letter to Captain Winsor are the names mentioned in the write up. The Butlers and the Winsors have for generations named their children after specific individuals. My maternal grandfather, for example, was James Winsor Butler, after James Winsor his uncle. My uncle Fred, Alfred Jewer Butler is named after his grandfather Alfred Jewer. Similarly, Thomas Avery Winsor, a prosperous merchant in Exploits, is named after his uncle Thomas Avery a business man who operated out of St. John's and Portsmouth England in the eighteen hundreds.
