170616:

Notes taken by Nimshi Crewe (found in MG281 at The Rooms) from the Terra Nova Advocate, St. John's, NL, Saturday 13th Sept. 1884:

"Married on Tuesday evening, at St. Mary's Church, by the Rev. E. Botwood, Rural Dean. Mr. Joseph E. Chase, of Bath, England, to Miss Elizabeth Hill, second daughter of the late Captain Washington Windsor."

He forwarded this note to Vic LeMessurier Badcock to see if she recognised these people.

170919:

Anna Elton Morris reported from an interview with their granddaughter Elizabeth (Betty) Cousins on October 1 1985 that this couple separated or divorced, though that was unusual in those days. He returned to England with one daughter, Florence, and left the younger daughter with "Mr. & Mrs. Lyons" who raised her because her mother, Elizabeth, ran off to live with her sister Annie in Oradel, New Jersey. Betty also reported that Elizabeth remarried there to James Morris of Brooklyn, New York but that would seemingly be a bigamous marriage. She then died at 33 on Sept 10 1898. The date does not quite correspond with the one I have and I suspect that what I have is actually the date the death was reported in the St. John's newspapers. Sisters Annie and Alice were both nurses and ran a nursing home in Oradel, New Jersey.

I'm really not sure where the baptism took place. I don't know whether there was a church in Aquaforte that long ago. According to the book "This is our Place This is our Home" by Joan Edward (Breakwater Books), the bible was donated to the St. Philip's on May 24, 1859 and it is thought by locals that the church was first dedicated about two years before that. I'm fairly confident that St. Luke's existed in Ferryland from about the early 1830s onward and it may be that all Aquaforte families travelled there for baptisms, marriages and funerals.

140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date. Also no way of knowing whether the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland as this information was not recorded on the register at Petty Harbour. The Christening date in 1864 must be an error on my part as there is no way there would be such a gap between birth and baptism.

Marriage Notes

280621:

Jean Carter Stirling's family history notes indicate that they were married in Aquaforte. This is actually possible because although St. Luke's existed at the time in Ferryland, there were long periods of time when no minister was resident there. That said, the parish register shows the marriage taking place in Ferryland.

Notes
General:
Date of birth shows as 1828 on Aunt Jean's photocopied records but 1827 in her LDS records. Needs to be verified.

According to Roberta Sullivan's transcribed notes (Nfld. Genealogical Society), her headstone in the Ferryland Anglican Cemetery reads:

"Elizabeth Sarah, wife of John Morry, died 13 February 1879 ages 51 years. Also, Augusta Windsor, died 17 June 1873 aged 15 years 7 months "

The date of death is off by a couple of days from Aunt Jean's records but assuming it was copied down accurately from the headstone it is the right one. Note that date of daughter's death is way off from our records of her birth (20 June, 1862) and death (21 January, 1878).

Add to this the following information in an email from Enid O'Brien 07/08/00:

"Re: Augusta Windsor Morry. The Petty Harbour Church of England Records state the birth 20/6/1862 and date of death as 21 Jan 1878. However, Elizabeth Sarah's date of buriel is listed as 16 February 1878, age 51 years. (She probably died on the 13th as on the headstone but I would think the year on the headstone is wrong, because I don't think they would list her as dead in the records a year before she died)."

All in all I've decided to stay with Aunt Jean's figures for now as there is too much confusion to decide one way or the other and these dates at least make sense from the age quoted (51 years).

From this I assume some near relative or relatives lived in Montreal but I have no idea who that may be.

300112: In the NGB transcript of the church record the dates of burial are sometimes mistakenly given as the date of death. It is not known if this is one of those cases.

030713: Dates in family bible are frequently at odds with dates found elsewhere and in most such instances are found to be incorrect.

070517:

Tracy Winsor, a distant relative descended from the Winsor's who went to the Exploits area, sent me the photo of a sampler which is in the media folder along with this explanation:

While collecting information, I learned of a gentleman who worked with the CBC many years ago (now deceased) that acquired many items from William Winsor's home in Exploits when it was falling into disrepair. It was reputed that the Winsor's family bible, and I very much wanted to see that bible and hopefully acquire it. After about six months, I tracked down the heir to his estate, who was very gracious and met with me, and showed me numerous items that came from the family home and permitted me to photograph them as they were not for sale (I think of the pieces frequently and still hold out hope he may allow me to purchase them at some point). Unfortunately the bible had gone missing with several boxes of documents, but he did tell me it had belonged to my Great Aunt Bessie and that it had been in dreadful water damaged condition. He then proceeded to show me a framed embroidered sampler made by Elizabeth Winsor, 1827 that was acquired from the house. There are many Elizabeth's in my family tree but the date 1827 did not match to any of them. Who made the sampler and how to came to be in the family home was a mystery, until I searched Elizabeth Winsor 1827 and came across your Great Great Grandmother. I was provided the opportunity to purchase the sampler, but I declined as the connection was too distant and although I have a healthy and ever growing collection of antiques, it wasn't something I was interested in. I've attached a picture of the sampler below (my apologies for the poor image quality, it was snapped quickly with my phone camera).

I researched English samplers, and learned the name of the embroiderer was often followed by the age of the "artist" when they finished the piece and the year of their birth. It is confusing as people assume the year indicates the year the sampler was made. In the case of this Elizabeth's sampler, she would have been eleven when she completed the sampler, and 1827 would have been the year of her birth.

I'm not sure how this piece ended up on Exploits island in the possession of my family, but I do know that they travelled to St. John's for business and Thomas Avery Winsor's wife was from St. John's, so it is entirely possible they visited with cousins in Aquaforte. Perhaps the sampler was given as a gift?

I am presently attempting to find out if the sampler is still for sale. If it is, I will buy it, regarless of whether it can be 100% proven that it belonged to my 2nd great grandmother.
Medical:
I am not certain of the cause of death but it took place in the middle of the diphtheria epidemic that nearly wiped out the family of Robert Morry, her brother-in-law 3197

021218:

In the register of St. Mary the Virgin in Denbury, Devon, the notes on her being received into the church following an earlier private baptism read:

"No. 42 Feby. 28th [1816] received into the Church, Elizabeth Sarah daughter of Peter & Sarah Winser Denbury, Seaman, H. Taylor [Curate]

Privately baptized April 2nd 1815 according to the rites of the church of England by Walter Kitson, Curate."

Other instances of this kind have been presumed to have indicated a difficult birth with a potential for the child not surviving. Thus the infant is baptized privately, often by a family member, shortly after birth. If this is the case in this instance it would seem that this child was born on or slightly before April 2 1815.

Yet there is contradictory unsourced information from another unnamed researcher on Ancestry that gives the date of Christening as 21 February, 1815 and hence the birth prior to that date. I do not know where he or she got this information but if it was from a family source this may imply that the child was actually born much earlier, possibly on 21 February 1815, and not baptized privately until 2 April 1815. This would indeed be unusual, if true. 8715
