From Penny Findlay:
Here are some notes on Robert Cockeram:
Born 1796 at East Budleigh, a son of John Buncombe Cockeram and his wife, Mary nee Lathey. Robert married Sarah Ball at Woodbury on October 5th 1826, The witnesses were Henry and Alicia Brand.
Although Robert was not the eldest son, he inherited Poolhays Farm when his father died in 1837. Possibly due to poor health, he sold the farm and moved to Topsham. He went into partnership with Henry Sweetland, born Ferryland 1787, and the 1841 census shows Robert Cockeram living on the Strand with his family. His occupation is "coal and lime merchant ".
The partnership was dissolved in March 1842, then sadly Robert died of consumption, age 47, on January 5th 1844, leaving his widow with several children to bring up, including Robert Pyle Cockeram, born September 13th 1843. He was Anne's great grandfather.
Sarah Cockeram lived until she was 92 and died in Islington, London where she lived with her widowed daughters. In each census from 1841, her birthplace was given as Ferryland.

• Census: Household of Robert and Sarah Ball on the Strand, 1841, Topsham, Devon, England.
• Census: Household of Sarah Ball, Widow, 1871, Reading, Berkshire, England. Includes daughters, Anna C. and Ellen [sic] M. and servant Anna S. Picton. Sarah is not employed. It also shows a nephew named Richard Linham whose name appears ahead of hers but not as the head of the household. He is aged 25, born in Margate, Kent and his occupation is brewer. The two girls are actually her step daughters. I suspect he too is a relation by marriage and not her actual nephew.

Her husband died only days after their marriage and hence she had no children of her own but his two daughters by a previous marriage became her responsibility to raise.
