Notes
General:
161212:

According to the qualification papers for Only mate, First mate and Master, provided by Brian Richard Frost, Henry Francis Ross Cockeram listed as his reference in these years the address of Francis Ross, Broadway House, Topsham, Devon. Obviously, although their relationship was not all that close (Francis Ross was the husband of his mother's first cousin), Francis Ross was looked upon as a benefactor by the younger man and no doubt mentioning this connection was advantageous in terms up his rapid progress up the line in his chosen profession.

300614 From Ruth Standring in Canberra:

In 1858, there are a number of Australian newspaper notices which state (via trove.nla.gov.au):
"COCKERAM or BRAND. Mr Thomas Cockeram, of Topsham, Devon, will find his brother Frank, by addressing him, Ship Coleroon, care of Clere Brothers, Queen street, Melbourne. Frank Cockeram, would like to hear from his cousin Charles Brand, or any person communicating his, or their whereabouts, would oblige."
