There is a mystery surrounding how this family arrived in the US. According to multiple references on Census returns for 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940, Frank senior, Laura and Frank Junior entered the country in 1904. But the same census returns indicate that Robert didn't enter until either 1905 or 1906, depending on which census form you look at, and then his entry was from Canada, not England.

Furthermore, there are two records pertaining to the entry of Frank Sr. via the Port of Niagara Falls on 2 Nov. 1906 indicating that he has been resident in Canada since arriving in Montreal on the SS Tunisia on August 19, 1904 and is entering the US simply to visit a friend called Osborne Williams in Buffalo. There is no mention of a family to accompany him later or who had preceded him earlier. There can be no doubt that this is the same Frank Collis because his profession is mentioned as photo engraver.

Add to this the fact that there is a birth certificate for Bob in Ontario dated 1 Oct. 1905 in York County (part of Toronto now) and this makes for one tantalizing mystery. Was the family separated for a period of time since first arriving from England in Canada or did they all remain in Canada until 1906 and the census records were in error and the entry for the rest of the family is simply missing. And why was Frank Sr. pretending to visit a friend in Buffalo when in fact his destination was really Philadelphia. Was this a ruse to get into the country or did the family actually stop in Buffalo for a while before moving on to Philadelphia.

The Passenger Manifest of the SS TUNISIAN arriving in the port of Montreal on August 19, 1904 does not contain a Collis family. But it does contain a record for F. Collins and his wife and son, with ages and place of origin that are correct. I am sure that this is they.
