There is a clear record of the baptism of this child which reads:

"Baptized May 2nd 1880. Bridget of Samuel Gosse & Elizabeth Martin. Sps. Frederick Fitzpatrick & Anne Gosse."

This record does not give the birth date so it can only be estimated to have been before the baptism date. The birth date of 30 April 1880 was derived from the record then given to the RC Basilica evidently as that is where it was transcribed by Don Lopes for the NGB webnsite.But if so one wonders how they would have known the birth date if it is not found in the original church register in Torbay.

Another curious thing is that this date precedes by two years the ostensible date of marriage of Samuel and Elizabeth according to Edwin Goss and Tom Gosse's GeoCities website. It seems highly doubtful that they would go to the trouble of having their children baptised at church and not have first arranged to be married at church. So I think the marriage date is in error. I have written to Edwin Goss to clarify this but am not sure if I have a current email address for him or if he is even still active/alive.

Problem solved!

Kevin Reddigan pointed out to me that there were two couples in which the husband's name was Samuel Gosse and the wife's name was Elizabeth Martin and I have mistakenly attached Bridget as the first child of the one couple when in fact she was the last child of the other. So I have removed her from the list of children of the first couple and am now making a separate but as yet disconnected family for her with the correct marriage details of her parents. Hopefully I will eventually figure out where they fit in the families of Torbay.
