• Alt. Birth: 1823, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Alt. Birth: Dec 1823, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Occupation: Farmer/Planter (All three brothers noted as this), 1859-1861, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Owner: Schooner/Brigantine JANE shared by William, Alfred and Thomas Goss, 1859-1861, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Information on the Brigantine Jane. I happen to own a copy of the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project CD published a number of years ago by the Maritime History Archive at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. This gives information on all vessels registered in eastern Canada and the northern US over a period from about 1820 to well into the 20th century.
A quick search reveals that the three Goss/Gosse men, Thomas, Alfred and William, did indeed own the Jane for the period from 1859 until it was lost at sea in 1861. It was originally owned and registered in the name of a Merchant, John MacLean, who had it built in North Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1855 and who transferred to the Goss men in 1859. But here is where the confusion arose as to whether it was a schooner or a brigantine. On the original registration in Nova Scotia, as transcribed and recorded on the ACSP CD it was referred to as a schooner with two masts, 80 feet long, 20 feet wide and a draught of 10 feet with a gross weight of 106 tonnes. The registration number was C855001 and the "official" number (by which you can trace any individual vessel from owner to owner and registration to registration) was 038527.
In 1859 when it was registered for use in Newfoundland, it was with registration number S859009 but the "official" number and the name were the same, so we know it was the same vessel. But now it is referred to as a 2 masted Brigantine. And its dimensions are totally different: 85 feet in length, 23 feet in width, 10 foot draught and Gross Tonnage 105 Tonnes!
Anyway, that was the only vessel that the Goss men ever owned according to the ACSP database. Perhaps they cut corners and did not have her ensured and lost everything when she went down at sea. The Greyhound, if it belonged to the Goss family, was never registered in their names.• Alt. Death: 28 Jun 1888, Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
