It isn't certain that Phillip Hoope (as he is shown on his marriage record evidently) is the same person as the Phillip Hooper who is the father of Walter according to Stoke Gabriel records and the son of Arthur and Justine Hooper of Heanton Punchardon in north Devon, as found in Family Search. The former record is most plausible; the latter merely possible. The location of Heanton Punchardon today is a naval college and it may have been so in the 1600s in which case he could have been a mariner, thus explaining his presence in the south Devon area.

The marriage record says is of Churston [Ferrors] but that may simply have been his domicile at the time of his marriage.
